Issue No. 4 September, 2000

President's Pen

Just as it is getting light enough to row in the morning, daylight saving has been reintroduced. We will, therefore, have another month of needing lights for our morning rows. Be warned that the Waterways Authority has just had a blitz on Iron Cove and issued tickets for those not carrying lights, and to the drivers of speedboats without adequate equipment. You must have a white light that is visible for 360o on the bow of your boat. An VIII must have two lights, one at each end. The Club once supplied these lights but has lost so many it is now the individual's responsibility.

Your Committee has organised itself into a number of sub-committees to try and increase the efficiency of the Club. If you have any specific problems, requests, etc or can offer your services in any particular direction please contact any of the following:

Rowing: John James, Richard Luxford, Steve Blatchford, Wally Wall

Social: Jane Moxon, Sue Walter, Kathryn Lewis

Finally, let's all of us hope the Olympics are a great success for Sydney and Australia and that our rowers are even more successful than they were in Atlanta.

Captain’s Corner

There is movement in the shed with some boats up for sale to make way for others coming in. Roseville's new VIII has arrived, the yellow quad is active and a new coxed fours is scheduled to replace the Gould by the end of September. Apart from the Gould, we also need to sell at least two of the coxed quads. Please let us know of any potential buyers.

The new season's program has been set by the NSWRA and the handbook is due to be sent out soon to registered members. The program should also be available on their web site (www.rowingnsw.asn.au) Key events to note are the Asia Pacific Games to be held on the Hinze Dam near Nerang, Qld on 28 October to 5 November, and our own Regatta on the Lane Cove River on November 12.

Turning back to last season it was pleasing that the Club came second in the Masters' point score, only 20 points behind Sydney University and the Club was ranked 9th in the overall premiership which was taken out by Sydney Rowing Club. Results for the State and National Masters Championships are shown below.

Congratulations to Mike Newington, Marni Harris and Kathryn Lewis who spent a full weekend in late July doing their Level I coaching coarse with NSWRA. These courses are run on a fairly regular basis by the Association and all Members are encouraged to do the course at some stage to progress their overall knowledge about rowing.

Montreal in September, 2001?

Anyone out there bound for Montreal in September, 2001? The World FISA Masters Regatta is being held 30 August to 2 September. If you, or anyone you know in any Sydney Club, is interested in competing, contact Linda Ormerod, phone 9416 1576 or email lindfield@alpha.net.au so we can start planning crews.

Roseville Report

Growing steadily over the past 5 seasons, Roseville has hit its maximum capacity and will, for the first time, limit the number of girls rowing to 65, up from 40.

The 2000/01 season will see us venture into the first VIII category of competition. The College has supported rowing and through the generosity of parents, we have purchased a second hand VIII, a year younger than the Club's Frank Lowy. The VIII is to be named The Rose and will see an increased capacity in our fleet as well as providing a top class boat for training and racing.

Our aim this year will be to look at taking a combined crew of Roseville, Monte and North Shore juniors to the Port Macquarie and Taree Regattas to race as a North Shore Women's VIII.

Finally, I would like to congratulate Alistair Gordon, former Club Member and son of Mrs. Barbara Gordon, Rowing Co-ordinator at Roseville for many years, on his selection to the Australian VIII to compete at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. I am sure all members of the Club join me in wishing him and the Australian Olympic Team every success in the upcoming Games.

Mike Curtin, Rowing Master

What the Northside Storage Tunnel will do for the North Shore Rowing Club!

As in other cities around the world, Sydney’s sewerage systems suffers from problems of entry of water through cracked pipes and illegal connections in periods of wet weather, with flow in those periods being many times that occurring in dry weather.

Sydney Water, with encouragement from the EPA, is tackling the problem in two ways; the slow one of getting property owners to stop allowing rainwater to run into the sewers and the faster more visible method of constructing the Northside Storage Tunnel.

Most of the time the new tunnel will be empty but, after rain, will fill with 300 OSPs of diluted sewage. So what will we get for our $430m? The engineers (upstanding reliable chaps) tell us that the number of events of sewage overflow into the Lane Cove River will reduce from twenty per year to only two. Still not a pristine waterway but certainly an improvement.

Former Club Members Excel in Their New Sports

We are proud to report the accomplishments of two of our former Disrow Members. James Pittar now excels at long distance swimming. He was the first blind person to swim the English Channel (1998). He was the first blind person to swim around Manhattan Island (28.5 miles) in 1999. In July this year, he was the first blind person and one of the first two people ever to swim from Martha's Vineyard to Nantucket Island (16 miles). Wow!! What achievements! Well done, James.

Claire Summersgill was a Member of the Club for two years and when it became obvious to her that rowing was not going to be included in the 2000 Paralympics, she decided to persue other sports. Claire has been a dedicated sportswoman since leaving school and she competed internationally in swimming and field events. And she has been chosen for the Paralympic Team for shotput and discus which is now the "icing on the cake".

Membership of our Club and the encouragement given to these two athletes were, no doubt, important incremental steps along the way. Congratulations to James and Claire for setting a fine example for us all.

And our own Tim Stephen, still a Club Member, won so many Adaptive Events in the past season that, if points had been allocated for these events, he would have won the point score award for sculling for the Club. Well done, Tim.

Thanks to Penny Stephen for supplying the information about James and Claire.

Ed.

GST News
