Dear All
Welcome to our final newsletter for 2002. Its been a year
since we arrived to Ballarat and Nordic. Looking back it has
been a year of changes and challenges, but we have survived
and are definitely better for it.
We are loving the quiet of
the country side, still get excited when we see a bunny, stop
to watch the wild ducks in our dam and stare back at our
farmers sheep.
At home our garden is overgrown, there are
marks on the walls, the furniture does not match, and the
carpet doesn’t look too flash, but we are happy and working
hard towards contentment and quality of life.
At Nordic we are now fully accredited with most health
funds, we are Medibank’s members choice providers, Workcover
providers and are also accredited at St John Of God hospital
to provide massage services.
We hope to continue to provide friendly service with an
emphasis on providing life skills in moving from health to
well being in all our clients.
Health to us is more than just
the absence of disease, it is when the person is healthy in
body, mind and feels empowered within oneself. We at Nordic
are always open to suggestions, ideas and constructive
criticism to improve our services, so feel free to contribute.
Summer is here, and it’s a crazy time of year,
with a festive spirit in the air. We would like to take this
opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Xmas and a very happy
New Year with good health and good fortune for 2003. Have a safe
and happy holiday season.

Daily Stretches
How to Stretch Stretching should
be done slowly without bouncing. Stretch to where you feel a
slight, easy stretch.
 |
Start with head in a
comfortable, aligned position. Slowly tilt head to left
side to stretch muscles on side of the neck. |
Hold stretch for 10-20 seconds. Feel a good, even stretch.
Do not overstretch. Then tilt head to right side &
stretch. Do 2-3 times to each side.
 |
Gently tilt head forward
to stretch the back of the neck. Hold for 5-10
seconds. Repeat 3-5 times. Hold only tensions that
feel good. Do not stretch to the point of pain. |
 |
Hold your left arm just above the
elbow with the right hand. Now gently pull elbow
toward opposite shoulder as you look over your left
shoulder. Hold stretch for 15-20 seconds. Do both
sides |

| Prostate
problems—Prevention better than Cure! |
The
prostate gland is a ball shaped gland about the size of a
walnut. It lies under the bladder and surrounds the bladder
outlet.
Majority of diseases of the prostate are:-
l Benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH), which is enlargement of the prostate and
is known as prostatitis.
l Prostate cancer.
Signs & Symptoms of BPH
1. Increased frequency of urination, yet difficulty in
passing urine.
2. Reduced force of urine stream
3. Feeling of incomplete urination
4. Experience bed wetting, some pain or discomfort of the
prostatic area.
5. Impotence.
If experiencing more than 2 of the above signs or symptoms,
then further investigation is warranted.
Tests
The medical test is to check for blood PSA (Prostate
specific Antigen) levels, where elevated levels of the enzymes
are indicative of prostatic disease. The reference intervals
are < 4µg/L. The test is the first method of screening for
prostate problems, and is used for assessing progress of
disease rather than diagnosis. Inaccurate results do occur and
often a further test is required.

Naturopathic strategies that benefit and reduce the risk
of prostate problems –
Long term supplementation with vitamin E an antioxidant,
which prevents free radical damage to membranes, DNA and
proteins. It enhances the immune system to reduce the risk of
cancer.
Multi
Vitamins has been used successfully to treat male sexual
disorders. It is required for various functions of the body
– energy, enzymes, cell multiplication, immune system, etc.
Zinc is found in large quantities in the prostate gland
where it has a functional role. It aids in the conversion of
EFA to prostaglandins, which reduce the risk inflammation or
enlargement of the prostate. Zinc reduces the conversion of
testosterone to DHT that contributes to prostatic problems.
EFA reduce inflammation and enlargement of the prostate.
EFA convert to prostaglandins, which inhibit excess
testosterone from binding inappropriately to the prostate
gland.
Lycopene exerts an anti cancer effect on the prostate gland
by its strong anti oxidant effect. Sources include tomato
pastes and sauces.
Soy phytoestrogens are isoflavone chemicals found in
legumes. Phytoestrogens offer protection against excess of
hormones in the body.
Grape seeds are bioflavanoids and an excellent source of
substance known as pycnogenols which potentiate the effects of
vitamin C a strong antioxidant. It also helps to detoxify
cancer causing substances, enhance antibody and white blood
cell activities, enhances anti inflammatory prostaglandins ,
boosts immunity to help combat cancerous cell.
Herbs like Saw palmetto and Urtica urens also inhibit DHT
and benefit the prostate gland.
Organic fruit and vegetables do not contain oestrogenic
pesticides that the chemically treated produce does and this
reduces the exposure to xenoestrogens that play havoc with
hormonal balance.
Reduction in alcohol especially beer, cigarettes etc
further reduce the risk of prostate disorders.
