Tours at Newnes:
The National Parks and Wildlife Service sometimes has ranger-led tours of the Oil-shale Ruins and the Glow-worm Tunnel. While the Glow-worm Tunnel Walk is usually quite good, our experience of the Oil-shale Ruins walk suggets that, depending on the guide, you may not get much information about the industial background of the site.
Normally, visitors independently follow a self-guiding walk through the ruins. There are some interpretive signs along the way and you can do this walk at any time. A NPWS booklet with a sketch map and some very basic information is on sale at the kiosk. There are more interpretive displays at the kiosk as well and the kiosk proprietor will try to answer any questions you might have. A more detailed brochure on the ruins is under development.
See: The Ruins of the Oil-shale Works page for more details about this area.
A comprehensive brochure giving details of the Glow-worm tunnel walk is also on sale at the kiosk. This brochure has both a map and a full description of the 9km circuit walk that starts 6.5km south of Newnes.
See: The Ruins of the Oil-shale Works page for more details about this area.
