According to researchers there have been members of the Munford family residing on the Isle of Wight as far back as 1st February 1659 when John MUNFORD  married Marian BAY in Milford near the New Forest in Hampshire and later moved to  Dipslade Godshill. They had six children and they in turn married into the families WHITE, COOPER, SAUNDERS & STALLARD. The family of Elizabeth Randall MUNFORD, nee FLEMING were farmers from Godshill and  on the 1881 census members of the FLEMING family occupied Roud Farm, Godshill

Munford Cottage Roud Isle of Wight

This cottage was allegedly occupied by members of the Munford family in Roud during Cromwellian times (1640-1660). A list of local Cromwell supporters and their donations to the cause are reputed to have been found hidden in the roof when the cottage was re-thatched during the 1960's. This contrasts with the story on the previous page  where the Walsall branch of the family in the Midlands were quite clearly Royalists. Incidentally the village of Roud was recorded as having seventy two taxpayers in 1378.

The churchyard in the picturesque little village of Godshill in the centre of the island is testament to the number of Munfords in the area. Christine Munford reports our part of the family lived on the island and worked on the Appledurcombe Estate near Roud and we have visited the cottage that they lived in which is called "Munfords". It was at least two cottages in the past but is now one rather nice period cottage situated at a place called Roud which is just about in the centre of the island and and is pictured below:-
