The South Sydney Rabbitohs were gallant in defeat against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium this afternoon (Sunday), going down 26 points to 18 in front of 24,217 Members and supporters. The Bulldogs scored five tries to three in a tough and willing battle that spanned the entire 80 minutes. The Rabbitohs fought hard throughout the game with the Bulldogs lifting their intensity in the second half to snatch the win. The Rabbitohs were the first to score when fullback Nathan Merritt crossed in the eighth minute of play. Halfback Chris Sandow delivered a cross field bomb towards the posts, which was collected by Merritt who scored adjacent to the uprights. Sandow converted to give the Rabbitohs an early six-nil advantage. Four minutes later the Rabbitohs scored in an identical position, this time through lock forward David Fa’alogo. A short ball from Issac Luke near the right-hand upright saw Fa’alogo charge and score next to the sticks. Sandow added the extras to take the score out to 12-nil. The Bulldogs struck back when Josh Morris scored in the 17th minute on the left hand side. Eight minutes later, Hazem El Masri crossed for his first of two tries after Jamal Idris knocked the ball back inside for El Masri to pounce. He converted his own try to bring the visitors within two. Beau Champion was the next to score, touching down in the 30th minute of play. Sandow made a long break and through a no-look pass inside which Champion collected and scored. Sandow converted again to give the Rabbitohs well-earned 18-10 lead at the break. The Rabbitohs were playing free-flowing, attacking football and it was paying off. The Rabbitohs were creating opportunities for themselves and they were taking them. The second half was, however, a different story. The Bulldogs came out with renewed a vigour and tougher resolve, really taking it to the Rabbitohs in the second forty minutes. El Masri scored his second in the 52nd minute, converting to restore the slim two-point advantage to the Rabbitohs. The video referee found in favour of Bryson Goodwin in the 61st minute, followed by a try to Gary Warburton in the 71st minute. The Bulldogs were able to hold out the Rabbitohs few attacking raids in the second stanza to steal the 26-18 win. The Rabbitohs were very energetic throughout the match, but were unable to play the high-intensity football for the whole 80 minutes. “We turned up with a lot of energy and played some really good footy to start the game,” Rabbitohs Head Coach Jason Taylor said. “We’re working hard to get through the tough areas in games. “They turned the screws in the second half and put the pressure on to us. “The game was there to be won, and I think we played well enough to win it, but we need to concentrate for the full 80 minutes. “We’ve got to learn from today. “They’re a very strong team and they were particularly impressive in the second half.” Rabbitohs captain Roy Asotasi said: “They came out in the second half fired up. “It’s disappointing we didn’t match them.

Luke Stuart has been placed on report during the match, but this was dismissed by the match review committee. Chris Sandow has however been placed on report for a grade one tripping charge and has taken a early guilty please to avoid suspension.

Bathed in sunshine parents and their kids flooded the surrounds of North Sydney Oval to witness the Bears 32 to 18 win over the Newtown Jets and see the foundation club retain the Frank Hyde Shield for 2009. Hot from his first grade stint with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, David Tyrell was a late inclusion. The Bears dipped their toe early in the fifth minute with a Samu Wara pass to David Tyrrell who, pinball like, hit, spun and passed to Bladen Baird who shot the pill to Reece Robinson to score. Only five minutes later Deon Apps was next to score under the posts to allow Justin Hunt an easy conversion. Jarryd Hogan was next to score at the twenty minute mark for Justin Hunt to convert again, leaving the Bears 16-0 in front. But within the space of ten minutes the Jets hit back with two converted tries to Sonny Tuigamala and Sisa Waqa, Tu'U Maori kicking the conversions. Both teams hit the sheds with the Bears in the lead 16-12. It was a longer wait for the first points of the second half when Deon Apps crashed over in the fifteenth minute to make it 22-12 to Norths. Ten minutes on, hard working hooker Beau Falloon shot a pass directly from dummy half to Jaiman Lowe who used brute strength to crash over the line, with Justin Hunt's conversion the Bears moved further ahead at 28-12. Less than five minutes later Beau Falloon put fullback Samu Wara through a gap. Samu then kicked to Reece Robinson to score his second try of the day and leave the Bears with a 32-12 lead. But the Bears lead was reduced in the final minutes of the match with Sonny Tuigamala's second try for Newtown leaving the Bears with the Frank Hyde Shield and a 32-18 win over the Jets.
