What is the Australian Tutoring Association?

Following concerns about the standard of tutoring organizations, the then NSW Minister for Education, Dr. Andrew Refshauge, wrote to tutoring organizations in May of 2004 advocating the formation of a professional body to uphold standards within the industry. Following this and similar concerns by Ministers for Education in other states the Australian Tutoring Association (ATA) inc. was formed in 2005. A copy of Dr. Refshauge’s letter is shown below.

The Australian Tutoring Association (inc) has around 300 members and you can view the full list on the ATA website: www.ata.edu.au. The site also describes the high ethical standards that ATA members are required to uphold.

The following is an extract from the ATA website:  www.ata.edu.au

The Australian Tutoring Association (ATA) is the only Association of its kind in Australia and it represents tutoring organisations and educational tutors throughout Australia.

Officially launched on 7th March 2005, the ATA has members from around Australia. The ATA has been formed in recognition of the need to unify the tutoring industry nationally. It aims to represent tutors and tutoring organisations, act as a lobby group and raise the standard of tutoring in Australia.

All of our members share this vision. They are all committed to helping students. As ethical practitioners they agree to abide by the Code of Conduct. You are invited to read this Code. Widespread application of this Code will help protect clients and ensure that they are receiving a high standard of service and accountability.
