Nordic
or Orthopedic Physiotherapy.
Andrew
is trained in both Australian (G.D. Maitland), and advanced Nordic or Orthopedic
methods of mobilisation, traction and manipulation of the spine and peripheral
joints.

Geoffrey Maitland, a South Australian
has contributed much to the development of manual therapy in physiotherapy in
Australia and the world. He has developed and refined joint mobilisation techniques
and ways of grading and specifying these techniques.
Nordic Physiotherapy (developed
in Europe), more recently called Orthopedic Physiotherapy was largely introduced
to Australia by Bill Atkinson. It developed mainly by the work of Freddy Kaltenborn
and Olaf Eventh.
Kaltenborn learned from and
modified joint mobilisation and manipulation techniques from his contemporaries,
in physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic. Olaf Eventh worked largely with
muscle release techniques localised to the joints. Orthopedic physiotherapy
places emphasis taking pressure off the joints when mobilising them, and always
addressing the muscles involved.
