Family Stories
Life in Australia:
Goymer Shorten, along with his brother John and a Coachman from London named Carnell, were sentenced to be transported to Van Deiman's Land for horse stealing at Bury St Edmond Quarter Sessions April 1835 via the convict ship 'Mangles' arriving Hobart August 1835. After a few misdemeanours, when he served time in Port Arthur and Norfolk Island, he finally married aged 46, Jane Duce in 1857. They raised a family of nine children, moving to Melbourne in 1876 and settled in Kensington.
You and Your Family:
I was quite surprised to find we had a convict in the family, when researching our family tree during a visit to Hobart Archives. Norma and Martin Black visited Goymer's village of Copdock, Suffolk in 2000 attending a service at St Peters Church where the Shorten family had attended church. We also visited Dry Drayton, Cambridgeshire where the Duce family originated from and found further records of that family.
Life Before Australia:
The Shorten family lived in the little village of Copdock near Ipswich, Suffolk. They were farm labourers, Goymer's occupation being "plowman, reap, mow, thrash, shepherd and milk" as stated in documents obtained from Hobart Archives. There were a large number of Shortens living in Ipswich as well as the family at Copdock.
