Family Stories
Jessie Ellis Gunn, his wife, Harriet, and their children, Sara, Harry, Emily, Fannie, Ada, Edith, Maud, Frank and Minnie (nine children), migrated to Australia in 1888 and 1889.
One of their children, Helena Black (Gunn) (my grandmother), remained in England.
Jessie Gunn and his son Frank, who would have been 16 years of age at the time, travelled to Australia on the SS “Iberia” arriving in Sydney on 5 November 1888 while his wife, Harriet Ann Gunn (Kearley), travelled to Australia on the SS “Ormuz”, arriving in Sydney on 18 March 1889 with eight of their children.
The Gunn family first lived at 12 Ennis Street BALMAIN, SYDNEY NSW – the building is still there, in good repair, as at 1996/97. Sydney Sand's Directory shows the family living at this address from 1889 to 1900 (last edition). Harriet's place of death as per her death certificate in 1914, is 48 Birchgrove Road, BALMAIN. Jessie was the Informant on Henry's death certificate in 1917 and his address is shown as 1 Westbourne Street, DRUMMOYNE. Also on Jessie's death certificate in 1920 his address is given as 1 Westbourne Street as well as the Informant's address – his son Frank.
Jessie, Harry and Frank were in the printing industry – working for the NSW Government Printer – Jessie was also a violinist. During the 1895 depression years Jessie turned his hand to “fiddle teaching”. His letters to his daughter in England (Helena Black – my grandmother) relate the economic and employment conditions in Sydney and certainly paint a dreadful picture of the times. These letters can be viewed in both manuscript and typescript on this web site. In the marriage certificate of Jessie's daughter, Emily Gunn, to Walter Rannard in 1898, Jessie's occupation is given as Teacher of Music.
Jessie Ellis Gunn, his wife Harriet Ann Gunn (Kearley), and their children Henry (Harry) and Edith are buried at the C of E, Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde, Sydney, in Section C, Grave Numbers 468 and 469. The inscription on the headstone reads:
“In Loving Memory of Harriet dearly loved wife of Jessie Ellis Gunn died 9th March 1914 aged 76 years at Rest. Also Henry eldest son of above died 28th January 1917 aged 53 years. Also Jessie Ellis dearly loved husband of Harriet Gunn died 16th May 1920 aged 76 years. Also Edith daughter of the above died 16th March 1936”
