All great religions, in order to escape absurdity, have to admit a dilution of agnosticism. It is only the savage, whether of the African bush or the American gospel tent, who pretends to know the will and intent of God exactly and completely.

The Virgin Birth

Virgin Birth or sanctified rape?

There are a number of interesting features about the virgin birth story.

Firstly, it is only mentioned once in the New Testament.  The event is obviously a landmark and a crucial element to the Jesus story if you are an evangelical.  So why is this incredible story only mentioned once?  The other gospels don’t mention it and neither do the other books of the New Testament or even the so called false gospels.

Secondly, one has to ask the question whether this alleged divine copulation with Mary is some sort of unconsenting rape.  Does the story demonstrate the male dominance model at the highest level?  Many Christians of all brands and religions still believe that the man is the head of the home and should be the authority with whom all matters are settled.  This attitude is fostered by the New Testament dictum that women should be silent in the church.  Of course not all Christians believe this and many reject the virgin birth as a fanciful fairy tale.
