God

Every religion has their own spin on what God is like.  What makes the Christian version the correct one?

All great religions, in order to escape absurdity, have to admit a dilution of agnosticism. It is only the savage, whether of the African bush or the American gospel tent, who pretends to know the will and intent of God exactly and completely.

Jill's response to Salvation.

All  religions were created after the great  teachers left the earth (Christ, Buddha,  Krishna etc).  Many of them focus on the fear of God, propaganda, rules and rituals.  They do this to the point that people stop thinking for themselves and follow the flock.  I see that many of those religions have some kind of truth in them but also added man made laws as well.  I think, we as human beings are to search inside ourselves to find the answers to the purpose of life and our existence.

Here is something Christians should think about.  For example, in Ephesians 4.6  it says God is in ALL, and that says ALL.   As in ALL people etc.  Well if God is in all why would God want to send a part of itself to some place of torment? ("hell")  Why would God want to judge, condemn or punish a part of itself?   Wouldn't that be like slapping the self to death with both hands, or slapping your right hand with your left hand?  The great spirit, the creator, the force behind creation, whatever name one wishes to call it, is the intelligence behind creation, right?  If you were God, would it be an intelligent thing to do, to place a part of yourself in creation (humans) only to set up a place of torment for a part of yourself?  Would you say that is even intelligent?  lol.  To me that would be like setting up a "boobie trap" to catch yourself in.  lol

Another verse in the Bible,1John 4.7 says God is love.  Here is what love says in 1Corinthians 13.4-8. In short.  LOVE DOESN'T KEEP A RECORD OF WRONGS, LOVE IS ETERNAL.  From pointing out those verses in the Bible isn't this an indication that God doesn't keep a record of people's mistakes (wrongs)?  After all it says God is LOVE- (as stated in john 4).  From stating all of the above,  how could salvation, and hell for that matter, even exist?  Why would we need to "save" ourselves if God is already in us?  Saying "we need to be saved" would be like saying a part of God needs to save itself  From what?   Itself?  lol  Hope that wasn't too confusing.  lol..

I think if we look at the bigger picture in creation, if God is in all of us, then we are not separate from God at all.  Just like the rainbow is made up of different colours but all part of the whole.  So how could Christians say "we need to be saved to get to God."  When God has been inside them, and us, all this time.

Thanks Mike.

Thanks Jill.  You raise another "unbelievable contradiction" which I will add to the section so named.  I raise the matter briefly in the section Forgiveness.  You also raise an interesting point on the sexual nature of God.  Is God an it, he or she.  For those who persist with the notion of a male God, I suppose they want to imagine a God with all the sexual genitalia of a man.  Ridiculous isn't it.  I've heard so many Christians jump down people's throats for calling God an it when they own belief system classifies him as a spirit creature.  I'm not sure what a spirit being would need the tackle for?

I think the classification of God opens more areas for problems than it answers questions.  This is the case with the LOVE topic.  The enormous contradiction of an "all loving" God opens the flood gates, especially when there is the counter doctrine of hell eternal punishment etc.  I don't have a problem with punishment, but eternal punishment.  If God is supposed to be just then where is the justice in eternal punishment for temporal crimes.  It's like condemning your own child to life in prison for them speaking back to you.

I agree with using the Bible to help Christians see their own mistruths but would seriously refrain from using it as a guide book to reveal hidden truths.  It does contain truths but much of it is untrue.  That sounds like a riddle.  A truth can be contained in a story that is not true.  For example the boy and the wolf story may be untrue, but it does contain a truth about trust.  Hope that is clear.

Since the topic of salvation is so crucial (from the word Cross), there is so much more to discuss.  I'll look forward to more in the near future.
