Masturbation.
Just saying the word makes you feel
strange (remember it's not strange to feel).
It's one of the things nearly everyone does but few admit to. That's a very
absolute statement but said tongue in cheek. One of the reasons why it's
not talked about could be because it's a 4 lettered word, three times
over. Ha ha!
The story of Onan in Genesis 38:9 has been regarded
as synonymous with masturbation. Anyway the suggestion that the story is
linked to masturbation is not correct anyway, although it has suited many
Christians to cite it anyway.
I remember sitting in the male only youth group as a
young teenager and having a speaker lecture us about the evils of
masturbation. He used the Bible verse when you were a child you behaved
like a child, but now as an adult behave like an adult. Well that was
helpful because we all know that adults don't masturbate. NOT.
Well even if some Christians now regard masturbation
as part of sexuality they still regard the lustful thoughts associated with it
as sinful. They quote, whoever thinks about having sex with a person, well
you have done it. To them it's the same as the physical act of intercourse
with another person. Hhhhmmmm!
The unfortunate reality with trying to put evil connotations
on sexual thoughts often lead to perversity and dysfunctional behaviours.
The sad story of celibacy in the priesthood is one example of how putting aside
your natural desires can manifest itself in inappropriate ways.
The whole idea that God created us sexual beings and
then tells us to suppress it is so ridiculous and counter-productive its not
funny. Let's get real!
