GEORGE WARRY (1797-1873)

(Millwright & Carpenter)

George the third child of Robert Warry and Elizabeth Hann was baptised 22 October 1797 at Merriott, Somerset, England.

He was to marry twice in life, eight children by his first wife, but none by his second wife. After the death of his first wife in 1 July 1841, George married a widow Mary Withey (nee Langdon) 30 September 1849 and they had no children. George died in 1873 and Mary died in 1876.

George Warry’s ancestry for several generations were ‘Blacksmiths’ but he became a ‘Millwright’ and then later a ‘Carpenter’. The carpenter trade/occupation may have come about as he married the widow Mary Withey nee Langdon whose husband was a ‘carpenter’ and it wasn’t till after this marriage George was recorded as a ‘Carpenter’.

George married Hannah Bartlett Masters at Barwick on 15 February 1825. Their children were -

(1) Elizabeth was baptised 10 June 1827 at Barwick . She married Thomas Hodges son of John Hodges and Elizabeth Hamblin 26 January 1846 at Barwick. Thomas was a Carpenter.

(2) Eliel was baptised with his sister Elizabeth on 10 June 1827, they could well have been twins. He married Elizabeth Woolmington/Woolmonton daughter of John and Ann Woolmonton on 8 February 1848 at Barwick and was a painter by trade.

(3) Ann was baptised on 12 April 1829 and married John Beaton son of John and Ann Beaton of Yeovil on 16 September 1851 at Barwick. John was a cordwainer.

(4) George was baptised 10 April 1831 and was an Agricultural Labourer. He was living with his father in 1851 and was mentioned in his uncle Samuel Bartletts will in 1854 but no other records have been found for him. Would like to know if he married or what happened to him

(5) Hannah baptised 28 March 1824 at Barwick when she was 16 months old. She married Eli Horsey son of Robert and Susan Horsey of Charlton Mackrell, Somerset on 7 October 1855 at Yeovil

(6) Jane was baptised 28 December 1834 but died in infancy. She was buried at Barwick on 10 December 1836.

(7) Samuel Bartlett was baptised 27 June 1837 and married Jane Hicks daughter of William and Mary Hicks of Dorset (likely Weymouth or Marnhull area ) on 13 February 1859 at Yeovil. Samuel Bartlett Warry was a baker like his Bartlett ancestry. His family moved to the Channel Islands likely after his uncle George Bartlett ?

(8) John the eighth and youngest child was born 22 January 1839 at Stoford and baptized at Barwick 24 February 1839, he emigrated to Australia at the age of 19 on the ship ‘Alfred’ departing Liverpool 14 June 1858 and arriving Moreton Bay Queensland 19 September 1858.

He married Elizabeth Jackson 24 April 1868 at Rockhampton. Elizabeth was a daughter of John Jackson ( a convict) b 1813 Liverpool, Lancashire, England and her grandparents were John Jackson and Elizabeth Warrey.
