can anyone help ?

My family history research into my  Bartlett ancestors began in the village or hamlet of Stoford, Somerset in early 1800’s. My great great grandfather John Warry who emigrated to Australia in 1858 on the ship “ALFRED” had been born in Stoford in 1839 and his mother was Hannah Bartlett Masters.  I easily found his grandparents

William Masters and Hannah Bartlett and then found his great grandparents Robert and Hannah Bartlett also buried at Stoford all was going well with my research ,the family had come from Crewkerne and were mainly bakers but there I run into a dead end. I found three children of Robert and Hannah Bartlett born Crewkerne 1775-1781 but none of the family earlier

  • Hannah baptised Crewkerne 31 Dec 1775 but died 14 December 1777
  • Samuel no baptism record found but in 1851 census shows born Crewkerne about 1777
  • George baptised Crewkerne 11 July 1779
  • Hannah baptised Crewkerne 8 June 1781

It’s likely that there were about 4 other children born between 1765-1775 with Robert the oldest born about 1765

Questions ???

(1) Was Roberts wife Elizabeth Bartlett still alive in 1841 census she would be about 70-75, (she is still alive when will is proved in July 1839), if so where was she living as not in Misterton 1841 census

Thanks to Fred Cox a burial has been found at Mosterton, Dorset for an Elizabeth Bartlett 17 January 1840 aged 81. This is likley Elizabeth probably moved to live with her son Matthew and his family after her husbands death

(2) Where was John Larcombe son of deceased Hannah Larcombe nee Bartlett and husband John Larcombe ( He would be born about 1820, he was under 21 when mentioned in will of 1839). Also where and when were John Larcombe and Hannah Bartlett married.

(3) Where were Robert and Elizabeth Humber nee Bartlett living for 1841 census.

(4) Amaziah Knapton married Mary Bartlett 23 December 1832 at St John the Baptist Yeovil, Somerset, England . From census records Mary Bartlett was born at Mosterton, Dorset, England  about 1802. Who were her parents ?

(7) James Warry married Elizabeth Bartlett 27 May 1800 East Chinnock, Somerset. Elizabeth Bartlett was baptised 24 September 1781 East Chinnock daughter of Joseph Bartlett and Elizabeth Clarke.

Joseph Bartlett, later described as a gentleman, married Elizabeth Clarke at East Chinnock 21 April 1776.  Joseph was himself baptised 29 May 1749, son of Theophilus and Mary Bartlett.  This Theophilus, according to the Land Tax returns for 1766, was the largest individual landowner in East Chinnock.

Was she related to Yeovil or Stoford  Bartletts. A witness at the above marriage was Thomas Allen

Joannah Pert was baptised 6 Dec 1801 Barwick, Somerset daughter Thomas Pert and Love (think Bartlett)

(11) On the same ship arriving Queensland as my ancestor John Warry the ‘Alfred’ in 1858 was

sons Peter Bartlett and Josiah Bartlett and daughter Ann Giles , a granddaughter Eliza Giles is crossed out. Appoints Executor John Hewlett linen draper of Yeovil

is this  family related in any way to Bartletts above ?

Another  site I’ve found very useful is the Online Parish Clerk for Dorset at

www.dorset-opc.com  where a lot of dorset areas have transcripts from census records and some parish registers

I’m fairly sure after all this I’ve at last found Robert and Hannah Bartletts marriage

31 October 1763 Mosterton Robert Bartlet married Hanah Meecham

A William Meacham married Ruth Warry 7 April 1751 at Chard, Somerset.

but where were they living and what children did they have 1763 – 1775 ??

My search goes on
