Welcome to the Web Pages of The WARRY FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY.

These pages are devoted to the  historical records of the Warry Family (and likely variations in spelling due to phonetic rendering of the name).

The Warry Family History Society was formed to gather and share family history information for all WARRY families and likely spelling variations and is a continuation of work undertaken by previous individuals and groups who did so much to gather and share the WARRY FAMILY HISTORY.

Presently a work is being undertaken to collate all previously gathered information , conduct new research and contact as many descendants of WARRY’s as possible for information, photographs, items of historical interest etc. The result from this will be a comprehensive history of the Warry family available to all interested persons on CD (for a donation to cover cost of preparation, handling and postage)

It would be appreciated if you could mention this site to anyone you think may be interested in the WARRY FAMILY HISTORY.

Likely Origin of the name WARRY

The origin  of the family name , and it’s possible and probable variants , has long been the subject of research, supposition and even fiction. While no definite conclusion has yet been reached , some theories can be advanced based on the fairly sparse amount of information available.

Surnames in general were not common before the Norman conquest , although some were in use at that time . After this, names of French origin  were used in addition to names of Old English origin, but it was not only the upper classes who needed to adapt an additional name, mainly as a result of the feudal system. The additional name was used to identify a particular individual and was not necessarily hereditary, particularly if the name described his physical characteristics.

However by the early 12th century, hereditary surnames became more common among the upper classes. It took the lower classes some further hundred years to adopt this system to any great extent. It must also be considered that an ‘Alias’ (without any necessarily sinister motive) was frequently adapted by people as late as the eighteenth century.

A surname could have been derived from a place name, trade or occupation name or even a physical characteristic which can make it difficult as some would be related where others would not be.

Many variations of a surname arose out of a lack of organised spelling and phonetics were the order of the day right up to the 19th  century. In most cases parish registers were written up by parish clerks whose literacy skills were very basic.

Thus almost any phonetic rendering could be a probable variation. Many examples of probable phonetic variation occurs e.g. – Warry, Warrey, Warrie, Warie, Waree, Warey, Wary, Warrye, Warray, Wharry, Whary, Wharrye, Wharye, Wharrie, Wharrey,Wherry,Worry,Worrey, Worie, Worray. (There are possibly others as well such as Wherry and Werry etc).

In some parish registers even children of the same parents have variations in spelling of their surname. Also it isn’t difficult to imagine how a strong regional accent would play its part in influencing spelling of a surname like ‘WARRY’.

It would appear though over time ‘WARRY’ became the standard spelling as most of the other variations with the exception of ‘Wherry’ and ‘Werry’ (if they are variants) seem to have ceased or are in small numbers. For example from the 1881 census of England and Wales each of the above probable variants was checked and there were the following numbers of people with these surnames
