Undertow

MQFF, if you can hear me, can we just have a Latin queer film festival?

Another South American film that dug a little deeper. Not a coming out story and not about choosing between one person or another. A simple and powerful tale about a man honouring a love despite the pain it causes his family, the confusion of his friends and the ostracism by his community.

Miguel was a great character. He had such pride in doing the right thing for his pregnant wife and supporting his local village. He enjoyed being a good man and new his place in life. Damn, I fell in love with him. And the struggle came when doing the right thing would potentially destroy all of that.

Again, denial comes into play. How shocking that Miquel tied his lover's body to the rocks to hang onto him. Knowing how important it is to send a soul to rest.

Superb acting, fantastic location and a truly moving experience. Perhaps it's because of where these films are coming from that are shaping these stories. In the west, America I'm talking to you, perhaps we're so out and defined in our community we no longer have the opportunity for these shades.
