In London, the Thames watermen operated large rowboats as taxis, taking people up and down the river. In the days of narrow roads and slow Hackney coaches, this was the quickest form of public transport. The occupation dates back centuries - probably to the Middle Ages - and pictures and maps of early modern London show the Thames filled with these watermen's boats. It was quite a bit like Venice with its gondolas, except that the boats were driven with oars, and there were no canals - just the Thames itself. There were many landing points or "stairs" where passengers could pick up the boats, either to cross the river or go to another point on the same bank, and particular watermen "belonged" to certain "stairs". The occupation became unprofitable about 1840, as steam-driven water taxis, carrying many passengers, drove the watermen out of business. There's an interesting account of interviews with the last generation of Thames watermen in the wonderful book, Mayhew's "London Labour and the London Poor", which is a mine of information about the humbler London occupations of the early 19th century. For the late 17th century, Samuel Pepys' diary is constantly mentioning taking a waterman to get from a stair near his house, in the City, to Westminster (up the river) or Greenwich (down).
