General Notes: Husband - Edward WOODHART

Edward, and his children, are often listed under the name "WOODWARD". All his descendants use WOODHART.

Was sent to South Africa just after the end of the 5th Kaffir War (against the Xhosa) July 22,1819 - Aug. 14,1819

From records in Cape Town

On the morning of the 19 June 1820, a Matthew Fysh was walking on the parade ground opposite the Castle of Good Hope [the military headquarters, still perfectly preserved to this day]. He was wearing a silver watch in his pocket, attached to a ribbon which was visible outside his clothing. Suddenly, he found himself confronted by the accused, Private Edward Woodhard, 22 years old, of the 54th regiment. Woodhard pulled the watch from Fysh's pocket, so forcefully that Fysh "felt pain in the area where the watch had been." Woodhard then ran away across the parade ground. Upon recovering from his shock, Fysh ran after Woodhard and caught up with him, and at the same time, the State Provost came out of the Castle and also gave chase, finally arresting Woodhard.

Woodhard testified that he was still suffering the after-effects of being intoxicated the day before, and both Fysh and the Provost testified that Woodhard had appeared to have taken temporary leave of his senses. The magistrate said that while the court heard the evidence that he was not in full control of himself, it was felt that an example should be made, to deter others from doing the same thing. Therefore, he was sentenced to be transported to New South Wales, and was required to pay the costs of the prosecution. He was to be confined to a secure place until his departure. Sentence was passed on the 22 of June, and promulgated on 15 July.

Convicted and sentenced to life for cattle stealing

Extract taken from "Story of the Allen Family" by John Allen, 1905. Source: Primary records at Richmond Villa.
"Searle was another noted cattle stealer and he died you might say in poverty, they all ended up that way. His wife was first a Mrs Chapman from the Hunter district. Chapman died. William Chapman who lived near Treagolden was her son. She then married Cann, (he was the father of Henry Cann of Wingham.) Cann was found hung in his barn. It was a very doubtful affair. Searle was an assigned servant on the farm, he was tried for the murder and only got off by the skin of his teeth, as they say. The widow moved up to 'Mondrook' and Searle came with her, he was a "lifer", but some bushranger made for his hut one night and Searle gave him up, and for this he got a free pardon. Then the widow married him and they went to Treagolden to live. They had cattle all over the district particularly down the river. The beach yard was put up by Searle to muster in. He sent 1,000 head away to the Murrumbidgee soon after we came. They started with 1,000 head but lost between 500 and 600 on the road and delivered nearly as many as they started with, that's the way they did it in those days."
