James Hammett took the surname “Hamlyn” by virtue of an Act of Parliament 34 Geo. James Hamlyn was Lord Lieutenant for Carmarthen in Parliament, and served “in several Parliaments” [gravestone] - from 1795 to 1809 according to W.G.
