This web-page details what is known of the life of Richard Hammett and his wife Thomasine (née Hamlyn).  Prior to their marriage each person is separately treated, first Richard and then Thomasine.  An Appendix has further information regarding Richard and Thomasine Hammett's children.  Except where otherwise stated the principal source of information is Devonshire Notes and Notelets, principally genealogical and heraldic by Sir William Richard Drake (London: privately printed c.1878).

Richard HAMMETT

Richard Hammett lived at the estate of Kennerland, in the parish of Clovelly, county Devon.

Thomasine HAMLYN

Thomasine Hamlyn was baptised on 7 October 1670 at Woolfardisworthy, county Devon.  She was the eldest surviving child of the family.

Richard Hammett and Thomasine Hamlyn were married and lived at the estate of Kennerland, in the parish of Clovelly.
 
Children: James, baptised on 25 October 1693 at Woolfardisworthy.
                 Mary, born in 1696.
                 Anne, baptised on 24 February 1703 at Clovelly.
                 Richard, baptised on 24 September 1706 at Clovelly; married Elizabeth Risdon.

Richard Hammett died and was buried at Clovelly on 28 June 1718.
 
Thomasine Hammett died on 8 January 1741/2, aged 72 years, and was buried at Woolfardisworthy on January 10.  On a grave-stone in the chancel floor of Woolfardisworthy Church is the following inscription:
   

Here lyeth the body of Thomazin Hammett of Kennerland, in the parish of Clovelly, who died January the 8th 1741, aged 72.

 

Appendix

The children of Richard Hammett and Thomasine (née Hamlyn):

James Hammett (baptised on 25 October 1693) married Mary Way (of Clovelly) on 10 September 1715.  James and Mary Hammett had no children.  Mary Hammett was buried at Clovelly on 26 October 1740.  James Hammett died, aged 56 years, and was buried on 25 January 1750 at Clovelly.  
 
Mary Hammett (born in 1696) never married. References to Mary in her uncle Zachary Hamlyn’s Will (17 May 1758; proved 31 July 1759) are as follows:
To my niece Mary Hammett (eld. da. of my late sister Thomazin Hammett) £1,600 and my picture & certain articles of plate… I confirm to my sd two nieces Mary & Anne Hammett certain rent charges (by Deed 8 May 1746) out of my estates in Clovelly, Hartland & Wolfardisworthy, co. Devon, & I also bequeath to them my Chambers in Lincoln’s Inn, New Square, co. Midd. (wherein I now live) with the household stuff, &c… My remaining share in a ship called the Prince George (exclusive of such share as I have already disposed of to my niece Mary Hammett) I bequeath to my great nephew William Hammett, one of the sons of my nephew Richd Hammett by Elizth his wife.
Mary died, aged about 84 years, and was buried on 17 January 1780 at Clovelly.
 
Anne Hammett (baptised on 24 February 1703) never married. References to Anne in her uncle Zachary Hamlyn’s Will (17 May 1758; proved 31 July 1759) are as follows:
By a deed dat. 2 & 3 June 1746, I have settled all my manors, lands tenemts &c., in the parishes of Clovelly, Wolfardisworthy, & Hartland, co. Devon, & my rectories, tithes, &c., in the parishes of Conwelgaio & Lansawell, co. Carmarthen, upon certain trusts. Since the above settlement I have purchased of Thos Limbear of Judeknowle, in the par. of Berry, co. Devon., gent., & Wm Orchard, late of Hartland, in the said co., gent., a messuage, &c., called Rudmore, als Ruddimore, in the par. of Hartland. I have also purchased of Elizth Cake of Wringworthy, in the par. of Mary Tavy, co. Devon, & her dau. Prudence Cake, a messuage & lands, &c., called Ashcroft or Eystecroft, in the par. of Wolfardisworthy. Also by deed (3 Aug. 1737) I purchased of Lewis Shuley, of the Middle Temple, esq., since decd, certain Rents out of lands & tents in Wolfardisworthy.   All which sd premises & Rents I bequeath to Anne Hammett of Clovelly, spinster, & John Velley of Hartland, gent., upon the same trusts as in the aforesd deed of 2 & 3 June 1746. Also by Indenture (23 & 24 March 1753) I have purchased of Edwd Cole, esq., & Sophia, his wife, certain lands, &c., in Wolfardisworthy, called Snaxlands. I have also purchased, under a Decree in Chancery, the manor of Highheannton, & Barton Farm & lands called Coleridge, in co. Devon. All which premises I bequeath to the sd Anne Hammett and John Velley upon the like trusts… To my niece Anne Hammett (another dau. of my late sister Thomazin Hammett) £1,200. I confirm to my sd two nieces Mary & Anne Hammett certain rent charges (see above)… To my sd nephew Richd Hammett, and my sd niece Anne Hammett, the sum of £800 in trust for defraying the school and university education of such sons as may yet be born to the sd Richd Hammett by Elizabeth his wife, and one of the sd sons so qualified to be presented to the Rectory of Claveleigh als[o known as] Clovelly, when the sd Rectory shall become vacant.
Anne Hammett lived at Clovelly.  Anne died at Clovelly, aged 65 years, and was buried on 25 February 1768 at Woolfardisworthy (according to her desires).  Her Will was dated 10 November 1762, and was proved in the Archdeaconry Court of Barnstaple on 5 May 1768.  Anne devised to her brother Richard Hammett her real estate in Clovelly parish for life, with the remainder to her nephew James Hamlyn.
