(Rev.) Samuel GREGORY Parents: (Rev.) Anthony Gregory and Helen (maiden name not known)
Samuel Gregory was described as the Rev. Samuel Gregory, M.A., of Petrockstow, where he was probably living prior to 1633. His father, Rev. Anthony Gregory, was rector of Petrockstow (probably until about the mid-1640s).
In 1633 Samuel was instituted rector of High Bray, a village located 10 km NW of South Molton in county Devon. On 2 January 1633 Samuel Gregory was presented to the Rectory of High Bray by “George Kelly, clerk for this turn by reason of a grant from Emmanuel Davie, gent.” George Kelly was the Rector of the parish of Charles (and Samuel Gregory’s future father-in-law). The parishes of High Bray and Charles are adjoining. There appeared, however, to have been some irregularity in Samuel Gregory’s presentation; a month later on February 3 he was again presented by “King Charles I, for this turn by reason of lapse and (alas!) simony”.
