Henry DRAKE Henry Drake was probably born about 1620 (but possibly as early as September 1612). Parents: not known [The identity of Henry Drake’s parents is open to conjecture – a web-page discussing this issue is in the course of preparation] The years of Henry Drake’s young adulthood was a period of great social and political upheaval in England. Until 1640 Charles I had governed without parliament. Between 1640 and 1642 there was a struggle for power between the Crown and the Parliament (influenced by Puritan aspirations), which led to civil war from 1642 to 1648.
Henry Drake married Marie Ley (née Bayley) on 11 June 1650 at Barnstaple. Marie was the daughter of Jacob Bayley and Alice (née Horwood) and the widow of Richard Ley (whom she had previously married in October 1641). In 1651-2 Henry was admitted as a Burgess at Barnstaple.
