This web-page details what is known of the life of John Drake and his wife Christian Hacche (or Hatch).  Prior to their marriage each person is separately treated, first John and then Christian.  An Appendix has further information regarding John and Christian Drake's children.  Except where otherwise stated the principal source of information is Devonshire Notes and Notelets, principally genealogical and heraldic by Sir William Richard Drake (London: privately printed c.1878).

John DRAKE

John Drake was baptised on 16 March 1682/3 at Barnstaple in county Devon.

John Drakes's father died when he was 5 years of age, in October 1688.


Christian HACCHE (or HATCH)

Christian Hacche was born on 8 May 1684 at Warkleigh-cum-Satterleigh, county Devon.

Christian was the third daughter of the family.

Christian's father, Robert Hacche of Satterleigh, died on 13 December 1699 and was buried at Satterleigh.

On 28 September 1705 Christian Hacche was party to a Deed.

Christian Hacche and other family members were mentioned in the Act of Parliament (Hacche Estate Act) 3 & 4 Queen Anne (1705 & 1706), entitled:
    An Act to enable Agnes Hacche, widow, and other Trustees to make leases and sell lands in the county of Devon for payment of the debts and legacies of Robert Hacche, esquire, deceased, and for the maintenance and advancement of his daughters' portions.


John Drake and Christian Hatch were married by license dated 9 May 1706.  Christian's mother, Agnes Hatch, was party to the settlement made on the marriage.

       Henry, born about 1709
       John, baptised on 27 September 1710 at Barnstaple; married (1) Anne Gregory
       on 12 September 1733 at Barnstaple, (2) Jane Harward on 6 August 1749 at Hartland, Devon; buried on 2 January 1770.
       Francis, baptised on 22 January 1711/2 at Barnstaple; buried on 16 April 1715 at

John Drake died, aged 29 years, and was buried on 26 January 1712/3 at Barnstaple.

John Drake's Will was proved on 4 February 1712/3 in the Court of the Archdeaconry of Barnstaple. [the copy of the Will has been destroyed]

Christian Drake married Charles Standish of Barnstaple (a merchant) on 8 February 1715/6 at Barnstaple [IGI record].  They had no children.

Christian and her children by her first marriage were mentioned in the will of her mother-in-law, Anne Drake, in November 1718.
    My daughter Christian Standish. My grandson Henry Drake… In trust for and during the minority of and until my grandchildren Henry Drake and John Drake shall severally and respectively attain to the age of one-and-twenty years.
They are mentioned again in a codicil to the will, dated 12 February 1718/9.
    My daughter-in-law, Mrs Christian Standish.  My grandson Henry.  My grandson John…

Christian Standish died before 27 April 1744.

 

Appendix

The children of John Drake and Christian (née Hacche):

Ann Drake (baptised on 19 January 1708), died as an infant and buried on 2 December 1708 at Barnstaple.

Henry Drake (born about 1709) married Mary Tucker on 28 May 1757 at Barnstaple.  Mary Tucker, the daughter of John Tucker (Royal Navy) and his wife Agnes, was baptised on 12 May 1745 at Barnstaple [IGI Records].  Henry and Mary Drake had the following children:
       Henry Hacche, baptised on 2 October 1758 at Barnstaple; married Frances –- (about 1782).
       John, baptised on 28 March 1760 at Barnstaple; buried on 8 July 1762 at Barnstaple.
[In 1756 a Henry Drake was Mayor of Barnstaple.  This Henry Drake (Magistrate) died in 1764, buried 17 December 1764].

John Drake (baptised on 27 September 1710) married (1) Anne Gregory on 12 September 1733 at Barnstaple & (2) Jane Harward on 6 August 1749 at Hartland, Devon.  [click a link for full details]

Francis Drake (baptised on 22 January 1712) died when aged about three years and was buried on 16 April 1715 at Barnstaple.
