The CPSC has been established to provide a centre of excellence in the assessment, treatment and management of the psychological consequences of exposure to traumatic events.

Trauma comes in a number of different forms. All of us have been exposed to world events such as 9/11 and the South East Asia tsunami but on a daily basis individuals may experience events such as motor vehicle accidents, sudden death or injuries, criminal assault, sexual and physical abuse and threatening/bullying behaviour at school or in the workplace. We all react to such events in different ways depending on factors such as our gender, our previous exposure to trauma and our family history.

The CPSC aims to provide a comprehensive service for dealing with the aftermath of exposure to trauma. Services provided include:

  • Assessment and diagnosis
  • Treatment including:
    • Cognitive behavioural therapy
    • Exposure therapy
    • Eye-movement de-sensitisation
    • Trauma incident reduction (TIR)
    • Hypnosis
  • Supervision of psychologists working in the area
  • Preparation of medico-legal reports and provision of expert evidence

A group therapy program for sufferers of PTSD is also being developed.
