A trip to remember!

The phone rang and it was good friend Alistair McDougal, who hales from Sydney. He wanted to catch his first Murray Cod off the surface, I knew then, it was going to be a hectic couple days!

Surface fishing is probably the toughest way to target Murray Cod but when the fish fire, it is simply the ONLY way to catch Murray Cod!

Day one was quiet "off the surface", so we resorted to s/baits to get Alistair on the board. 5 Cod and 4 Goldens was his tally by days end, but still nothing off the surface!

With one day to go, the pressure was on to get Alistair onto his first surface caught MC. The weather looked nasty and could have cut short our trip, never the less, we were up at dawn and heading for the river.

We were greeted with dark clouds and light rain, perfect conditions for running surface lures! The clouds would extend the "low light period" for hours to come, it would give the fish a sense of security. Many MC would be caught in only inches of water!!

My first cast into a back wash, produced the first "Boof" with Alistair bellowing "what was that?" With out a reply, I cast back into the same spot and was on. Alistair's face lit up with excitement. He snapped off a few quick pictures to document the occasion before we slipped the fish back into the water.

This action was to continue for the next 3 hours with Alistair experiencing one of the hottest surface bites I can remember. Not all the strikes were converted into catches but for those who enjoy surface fishing for MC would agree, the best part is the "BOOF" and we certainly got plenty of them!

None of the Murray Cod we caught broke any records, however, we both knew we had just witnessed something very special!

In total, between us, we caught and released 30 MC and half a dozen Goldens for the two days. Ten of these MC were caught using surface lures.

Regards Michael.

Hot Surface Session!

Once an active fish is located, it's just a matter of time. This cod struck the lure several times before finally hooking up!
