INSTRUCTIONS

THIS TUTORIAL WAS CREATED BY INFIRMUS & SOMA

I am going to recommend Azureus to people who want to use BitTorrent on TPG. It may be more resource hungry etc, but it does everything we want it to and is also very popular to boot (you may want to use another client, thats fine if it works for you). To run Azureus you will need to have Java Runtime Environment installed. You can get Azureus from azureus.sourceforge.net and the Java Runtime Environment from www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp .

For good speeds on BitTorrent you have to be "connectable" which means that other people using BitTorrent have to be able to connect directly to one of your ports over the internet. TPG makes this more difficult because they run a transparent proxy which sometimes prevents the BitTorrent tracker from successfully detecting what your IP address is, and therefore other clients can sometimes be trying to connect to the wrong IP (usually TPG's proxy IP) making you unconnectable.

The first thing we will want to check is if the correct ports are open to the internet. Azureus only needs one port to be open (by default TCP port 6881). If you are using a router Azureus can automatically open this port through your router using uPnP, assuming you are running Windows XP. If you are running XP, when you open Azureus two boxes will slide up on the bottom right corner to let you know if it was successful (you can usually view ports opened by uPnP in your routers web config, on a status page). If you are not running Windows XP then you will need to manually port forward the correct port (6881) to the computers LAN IP that you are running Azureus on (To find this, go Start > Run, type in cmd. Then type in ipconfig. Your LAN IP is displayed next to IP Address). This process varies from router to router so consult your manual.

If are not using a ADSL mode/router, you will probably have a USB modem, this doesn't require any port forwarding.

Now we need to make sure that the port we are using is not being blocked by any software firewalls (as well as hardware ones, if you have one set up). In your software firewall open up port 6881 so that the traffic can get through. This process again varies according to what software you are using, so you are on your own.

The process for opening port 6881 in Windows XP SP2 is as follows.
Go into control panel...Windows Firewall....Exceptions tab...Click Add port...Enter a description such as "Azureus"...enter 6881 in the port box and press OK...then OK again.

Now for the TPG specific part. We are going to set up a dynamic IP DNS service. I am going to recommend dyndns.org as a good place.

Sign up for an account at dyndns.org. Once you are logged in click on services and then Dynamic DNS. Click Add Host and choose a DNS name and sub-domain that you would like. Don't worry to much about the IP address that you enter. Click add host.

Now set up either your router or a software client to automatically update the DNS records to your current IP address whenever it changes. I know that most Billion routers have a inbuilt Dyndns.org updater (Can be accessed by going into web config...Configuration...Advanced. ...Dynamic DNS) and so probably do many others. If your router doesn't have this functionality download a software client from this link https://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/clients.html and install it and set it up with your dyndns.org account details.

Once that is under your belt open Azureus. Click the View menu...Configuration...Server... and enter your newly registered DNS name in the Override IP address box. Azureus will resolve this DNS name to a IP address and send it to the tracker instead of the TPG proxy IP. Press Save, down the bottom left.

And you are now done, and should be able to use BitTorrent successfully. It should work on most BitTorrent trackers, the only ones that wont work are trackers that are unsuccessful at detecting your proper external IP (and only detect TPG's proxy IP) and also refuse to accept the Override IP that Azureus sends to them.

When you see a green smiley in the health column it means that you are definitely connectable. Don't panic if you don't see a green smiley straight away, it can take a few minutes sometimes, and sometimes not at all if there is barely and traffic on the tracker and no-one requests you to upload/download to/from them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a usage meter?
A usage meter is a small program which runs on your computer, which allows you to quickly check your internet usage.

Why should I use a usage meter?
Some TPG plans (1.5mb Value, 1.5mb Value Unlimited) have a usage limit.

On 1.5mb Value, once you have reached your 200mb limit, excess usage is charged. Likewise, on 1.5 Value Unlimited, after the 20gb limit is reached, the speed is throttled.

By regularly monitoring your usage, you can prevent excess charges or shaping. Usage meters make monitoring extremely easy.

Does TPG provide a usage meter?
No, TPG does not provide a standalone usage meter which can be run on your computer. However, an online meter is provided. To access this meter, log in to your account at www.tpg.com.au and choose "Check Your Account Usage".

Why are my usage details not updating regularly?
Currently, usage meters grab data off TPG's web site to calculate the amount used. This data is only updated daily, at around 10am, therefore, usage data is not realtime.
