Trivial Facts About Egypt #27

Sankhkare Thutmose
Which sister of a pharaoh avenged her brother's murder by inviting the culprits to a feast in an underground chamber, which she then flooded by means of a hidden pipe? Who was the pharaoh? And what became of the princess after her revenge?

Maria Marius
Herodotus wrote of a woman named Nitokris who appears to have acted as king of Egypt for a while. She killed many people to avenge the murder of the king, her brother. She did this by constructing a huge underground chamber. Then inviting to a banquet all those she knew to be responsible for her brother's death. When the banquet was underway, she let the river in on the "guests" through a concealed pipe.

That's right on the first two parts

Do you know what purportedly became of her? I think you win the Feather, anyway, but just wondered if you wanted a go at that part. *g*

Maria Marius
Room full of cinders...

I didnt' quite understand this part of the story. She purportedly threw herself in a roomful of cinders--or maybe it was embers? I can't see that this saved her from the flood. Maybe it was her way of committing suicide?

Sankhkare Thutmose
You got it, Maria!

The years following the death of Pepi II are clouded in mystery. The only person from this era to have left much of an impression was a princess called Nitokris who appears to have acted as king for a time. No contemporary Egyptian records have been found, but Herodotus wrote:

"She killed hundreds of Egyptians to avenge the king, her brother, whom his subjects had killed, and had forced her to succeed. She did this by constructing a huge underground chamber. Then invited to a banquet all those she knew to be responsible for her brother's death. When the banquet was underway, she let the river in on them, through a concealed pipe. After this fearful revenge, she flung herself into a room filled with embers, to escape her punishment."

He never made clear why a princess acting as pharaoh might have expected a death sentence...or worse.
