![]() Commemorative scarabs such as this one above were issued by Amenhotep III to celebrate and advertise milestones in his reign. Generally made of glazed steatite, they fall into five main categories: the numerous and so-called marriage scarabs which mention Amenhotep and Tiye; some celebrated his marriage to the Mittanian princess Gilukhepa; some celebrated of the creation of an artificial pleasure lake at Birket Habu constructed as a gift for Queen Tiye; and two additional series commemorated respectively the successful hunting of wild bulls and lions. Scarabs such as these were awarded by Amenhotep III to favoured courtiers at home and abroad. |
