Thursday 12 DEC 2002Steven ninemsn says: Welcome to tonights Live Chat with Liberty X. Unlike our regular chat rooms, this live interview is moderated. This means that all questions you enter are sent to an Interview Host who decides which questions will be asked our guests.
ninemsn together with the Dolly Whisper chat room presents a Live Interview with Liberty X, currently the hottest pop group in the UK!
I would like to welcome all the members of Liberty X joining us for tonight's interview.
Liberty X says: Thank you. It's Michelle here
Steven ninemsn says: We'll get straight into the questions from our guests who have been waiting for your arrival.
?Stëvën? asks: In once sentence, what is Liberty X?
Liberty X says: Liberty X is a mixed group offers a variety of music on the album. In a few words I'd describe it as pop RMB.
Cute_brunette4 asks: how are you feeling about performing in front of 50,000 people at rumba in Sydney?
Liberty X says: Really, really looking forward to it. We heard Sydney is the big one! So, can't wait.
rowdy_rach asks: Hi everyone. I saw u at Rumba on Sunday and I was wondering who came up with the cane routine that u do in ur Just A Little clip and performances?
Liberty X says: We wanted to do a different dance routine for that song because we thought it was special. Our choreographer came up with the cane idea
naughtynae1 asks: Whats a typical day like for Liberty X?
Liberty X says: There is no typical day. It could be radio or tv interviews or we could be doing gigs all day, finishing at midnight, having to get up at 4am the next morning for a flight somewhere else.
Country_Babe_521 asks: who are your role models that inspired you to become what you are today?
Liberty X says: My parents. And in the business, Mariah Carey was always a role model.
Cute_brunette4 asks: how has the rumba performances been for u lately?
Liberty X says: They have been fantastic. Melbourne was the best so far. We followed Bon Jovi, which was a tall order, but the crowd were brilliant.
__Gangsta_Luvn__ asks: Hey i saw u at the melbourne rumba you were great but putting Bon Jovi on before you was a bit unfair, were you disappointed?
Liberty X says: Not disappointed no, it was a challenge but I think it worked out in the end and to follow someone like Bon Jovi, who I've been a fan for for as long as I can remember was very nerve racking!
?Stëvën? asks: How did you get involved with Rumba?
Liberty X says: Our record label V2 and Zomba. I think Zomba got offered the gigs by Rumba.
Cute_brunette4 asks: out of all the rumba artists who were you excited to see perform?
Liberty X says: Pink & Bon Jovi. I think they're both amazing.
rowdy_rach asks: Ur with the record company Zomba who also have the BSB, N*Sync and Britney, how did u react when they wanted to sign u?
Liberty X says: Very excited. Britney and Nsync are my fav artists so, very very excited!
Handing you over now to Kelli.
Liberty X says: Hi Kelli here...
Steven ninemsn says: Hi Kelli! Welcome tonight.
Liberty X says: hi guys!
Cute_brunette4 asks: where's your favourite place to visit throughout Australia?
Liberty X says: Well, so far probably been Sydney. Brisbane has been great, but Sydney seems to have a lot going on although we've only been here for an afternoon.
SwEeT-LiKe-CaNdY-03 asks: Kelli, will you be playing at the next big day out?
Liberty X says: I don't think we will be playing at the Big Day Out as we have a UK & Ireland tour coming up in March which we need to rehearse for. And, we're going to be in France a lot in January as well.
ThunderyChEeKy_ChIcK asks: Were you guys disappointed when "losing" on Popstars?
Liberty X says: At the time, yeah. But it soon became obvious that we weren't meant to be in the band that they chose.
ßåßÝgﮣ asks: Why is it, that you are better than the real popstars?
Liberty X says: Thank you. I don't know. I don't know if we are better than them, but I think we had a lot more time to grow as a band and find a musical direction that we liked.
º°§?urfette°º asks: Hey Kelli, How old were you when you started singing?
Liberty X says: Probably about 14.
they_wont_stop_screaming asks: Has fame changed you in any way shape or form?
Liberty X says: I think it has made me a little bit more of a private person. Just made me very, sort of, conscious of protecting family & loved ones.
Cute_brunette4 asks: which person seems to be the most popular person when your just like walking down the street?
Liberty X says: It depends on which country we are in actually. In Italy, it seems myself and Tony are popular, but in Germany Kevin and Jessica are very popular, and Michelle is loved in the UK.
Nighthawk481 asks: Kelli, what made you start a career in the music business?
Liberty X says: As I grew into my teens I got into performing and really enjoyed it. Then I got better at it the older I got, so it just seemed obvious to try and choose it as a career.
ally_pez asks: What is the next single u r going to release in the uk and why?
Liberty X says: We actually can't let that out. The next single will be a big secret, but we can say its a collaboration.
SpikeMeNow asks: Hi Kelli, is it weird to be recognised in the street and does it bother you?
Liberty X says: Hi SpikemeNow! It's weird. Probably when I'm going to get my groceries it can be weird, but most people are nice, so it doesn't bother me at all.
hotguy_4u_18 asks: What's your advice for anyone wanting to get into the music industry?
Liberty X says: To go to as many classes as you possibly can to gain confidence, rehearse, and write songs if you can as well. I'd say don't try to change yourself to be what you think they want because the best thing about each person is their individuality.
LicKeTy_SPLiT_172 asks: Any embarrassing moments while on stage?
Liberty X says: good question! Oh, I dropped my cane and we were doing a morning TV show in the UK called GMTV which has the highest ratings. Eight million people watching and I dropped the cane! It was awful also because I wasn't in shot. I sort of took my time picking it up and the whole time the camera was on me! Very funny.
Guys, I'll now hand you over to Kevin. Lovely chatting with you. See you at Rumba!
Steven ninemsn says: Hi Kevin, welcome.
Liberty X says: Hello, thanks guys, great to be here.
Steven ninemsn says: Firstly, we are getting many comments in so I'll barrel it into one comment. Everyone is saying "Kevin is cute"! Now that is over we'll get to the questions.
LogicalG asks: You guys recieved a platinum record each today on Channel V. How was that?
Liberty X says: Thank you, cheers! It was brilliant! We're still waiting for the ones in England actually. It's pretty special.
sexyangel_or_devil7 asks: How is the group going? Do you think you will stay together long because most of the other popstars have broken up?
Liberty X says: Yes I do. I don't really think about anyone else to be honest. I think we will stay together.
Aussichic1 asks: Which of your songs do you like better: 'Just a little' or 'Thinking it over'?
Liberty X says: Probably 'Just a Little' for me. It's given us an opportunity to come out to Australia and other parts of the world as well, which 'Thinking it Over' didn't really do.
SpikeMeNow asks: Do you all agree on the direction of your music, or do you all have quite different musical tastes?
Liberty X says: We all have different musical tastes, but we agree on the music we actually want to sing.
ColourfulLemming asks: Do you get to go out on the town when you're on tours? You know have some fun! (wink wink).
Liberty X says: Yeah we do lol! I mean tonight we have. It's just if you really want to, because sometimes you're tired and just want to chill out.
Cute_brunette4 asks: whats the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you guys?
Liberty X says: quite a lot of things actually. Too many to really remember to be honest.
Fayefel asks: Why do the girls wear next to nothing but the boys are always fully clothed? It doesn't seem fair!
Liberty X says: lol trust me we want it that way! There is only really so many styles of things you can wear as a lad without coming across cheesy you know?
Steven ninemsn says: Good response!
ßåßÝgﮣ asks: At the rumba performances, was it a great turnout for you?
Liberty X says: Yeah, it was brilliant. I mean when you're doing a gig where there are so many artists. You know its going to be a good turnout but we were really, really happy with the response of our songs.
rowdy_rach asks: Do you like getting all the fame and attention or does it get annoying?
Liberty X says: It is really cool. It's not mad. It's like a nice level, really enjoyable.
ColourfulLemming asks: Does playing live on stage give you a real adrenaline rush and make you feel pumped?
Liberty X says: Yeah, definitely. You can be tired all day and then you get on stage and you just wake up, and then can't get to sleep after that.
GroovierJellyfish asks: Where did you come up with the idea for 'Just a little bit'? It's a great song!
Liberty X says: Thanks. We actually got the track from a really good writer, so I guess the idea was hers. I guess we gave it a different flavour though.
Nickylou4 asks: Any suggestions for people hoping to get into the industry?
Liberty X says: Try and get as much experience as you can. Maybe do talent shows. Enjoy yourself, be yourself, and practice a lot!
Guys, thanks, am now handing you over to Tony. Thanks for your support.
Steven ninemsn says: Thank you Kevin. Welcome Tony!
Liberty X says: Hello everybody!
Aussichic1 asks: Tony, do you have a girlfriend?
Liberty X says: Yes, I do.
ThunderyChEeKy_ChIcK asks: Where did you film the video clip for 'Gotta Have Your Love'?
Liberty X says: It was filmed in Jamaica and we spent three days there in a hill in the jungle in a villa and it was amazing!
çÚTÉ_bûT_sÉxÿ_wóGÇhÎÇk asks: Hey TonY!!! Which Rumba concert had the best after party or which did u enjoy the most?
Liberty X says: We haven't been to all the parties because we've been doing nightclub gigs, but the one in the Crown Casino in Melbourne was really good.
rowdy_rach asks: Hey Tony, I gave u a hug at Rumba on Sunday. How come we don't here u sing ur own verse or something in the songs u did?
Liberty X says: Hi there. I did. You must have been looking elsewhere when I was singing!
CraZy_gurl_007 asks: What is the strangest thing a fan has ever done for you?
Liberty X says: One fan gave me two packets of biscuits at a football game. Not sure why biscuits, but it was nice.
ally_pez asks: What do you honestly think about the demise of Hear'Say?
Liberty X says: I think it's sad that its over so quickly and if I had have been chosen for the band, I would have been devastated!
Fayefel asks: Were you disappointed when 'Holding On For You' didn't make it to number one? I think its a great song!
Liberty X says: Thank you for saying its a great song, and no, we were actually surprised it got to number five because it was the fifth single in the UK from our album.
Duncans_Babee_Gurl asks: Who's been your favourite act to watch at Rumba?? I LUV YOU TONY!!!!!!!!!
Liberty X says: Thank you! My favourite performance has been Pink in Melbourne.
ColourfulLemming asks: Do you get a lot of hot chicks coming up to you on the street giving you their numbers and so on?
Liberty X says: Not enough! Actually hardly any. Some at gigs and stuff but not enough.
Canberra_guy4 asks: When you were growing up did you always wannabe a Popstar?
Liberty X says: No, initially I wanted to be a doctor (my dad is a doctor), then I got the grades to study law at uni. But while I was touring with a dance show I decided I wanted to write music for a career.
°«°LíL°P®ïn¢ëss°²ºº² asks: Is it fun being in a band or would you rather be by yourself?
Liberty X says: It's much better fun being in a band, and no, not rather be by myself coz I think we're so much stronger together than individually.
VersaceSupaStar asks: Like Gareth had to overcome his stutter, did u guys feel u had any problems to overcome?
Liberty X says: Yeah, because we were the losers of UK popstars and we had labels like flopstars branded by the press to prove wrong, and also, we were sued and lost the right to use our name Liberty.
Steven ninemsn says: It seems you have become a true success, we hope your success continues.
Liberty X says: Guys, thanks to everyone that helped just a little.
Handing over to Jesicca now - bye!
Steven ninemsn says: Welcome Jessica. Can you tell us who has been your greatest influences?
Liberty X says: Hi guys! I guess my greatest influence was Diana Ross. Growing up listening to her really influenced me as a singer.
Cute_brunette4 asks: How much different is Australia to the UK for you guys?
Liberty X says: Really different. Really really different! I'm not saying that the people in England are miserable but people here are really friendly, positive and happy. Haven't met anyone yet that's not happy. Way of life is different sunshine, beaches, you know...
Fayefel asks: Since you were in the original Popstars, who do you want to get the Christmas #1 from? The Rivals? Girls Aloud or One True Voice? Or neither?
Liberty X says: Oh I really don't know. I don't necessarily want the one of the Popstars rivals to get number one. It just depends on what the best song is.
Steven ninemsn says: Jessica, I'm sorry but our time is just up. Thank you all for joining us tonight. Jessica, we'll leave the closing comments for you. Is there anything you wish to share with our chatters?
Liberty X says: I would like to say thank you for logging on. Must say thank you to everyone who has come to Rumba and supported us, and thanks to all you aussies in general. We've had a great time and made us feel welcome.
Bye guys!
Steven ninemsn says: Thank you again and all the best in your careers.
This concludes our live chat with Liberty X on 12 December 2002.

Pop profile- Thinking It Over with Liberty X
The Sun Herald, K-Zone On Sunday
Sunday 5 JAN 2003We gave Liberty X a few things to think about just in time for their new album, Thinking It Over. Here's what Jessica and Kevin had to say!
What's one thing that causes you to 'think it over' everyday?
JESSICA- Probably something like what to wear in the morning! I also think over things to do with home, like, I think about my family and my friends and people I'm missing I think over that a lot. I'm never really at home.
KEVIN- I think over when am I going to get a day off?! (laughs) I'm always asking that. Not that I'm lazy. Just the same reason as Jessica, I'd like to go home and see my family.
If there was one colour to describe Liberty X what would it be?
JESSIA- Silver - because when the lights hits it, it looks very cool and we're cool!
KEVIN- Maybe red? We're all kinda fiery people
What cartoon characters would you like to be for a day?
JESSICA- I'd be Johnny Bravo, just because he gets to do loads of cool things all the time. I'd also like to see what it's like to be male!
>KEVIN- I would be Homer Simpson because he's constantly sitting around and getting into adventures
Jessica, how would you describe Kevin in one word?
Prankster!
Kevin, how would you describe Jessica in one word?
Mother hen! (laughs - okay that's two words!)
We gave Liberty X a few hypothetical situations to think over. Here's how they imagine they'd react under pressure!
TASK 1
What would you do if your parents were abducted by aliens and needed to be rescued?
KEVIN-I'd do anything that was necessary. I wouldn't even think it over, I'd probably just be quiet silly and go straight in to it.
JESSICA- Liberty X will join together to get them back! I think we'd build a rocket or something if they were trapped in space. Once it was built, we'd go for it.
TASK 2
If Liberty X was in the playground and they saw a group of kids bullying another kid, what would they do?
KEVIN- We'd go over to the person being bullied and we'd ask them to be in our band! And then we'd make the bullies be our back-up dancers!
TASK 3
If there was one thing Liberty X could do for the community, what would it be?
KEVIN- Set up a playground 'cause there aren't many playgrounds in the UK. Teenagers don't really have much to do.
What would you include in this playground that no other playground has?
JESSICA- A recording studio would be really good actually. You could maybe even have sessions where you get kids to write songs and stuff. You know, get someone from the band in to do some stiff.
Group Secret: We have a big group hug before we go on stage or TV.
Liberty Freed After Thrill Ride Power Cut
RUMBA Rumblings #1: Record company promotions personnel were on tenterhooks on Wednesday when members of UK pop outfit Liberty X were stranded in the rain on the top thrill ride at a Gold Coast theme park.
The Daily Telegraph, Sydney Confidential
Friday 13 December 2002
This came about by a power failure caused by the freak storm which hit the Gold Coast and Brisbane area.
While stranded without cover, the theme park staff immediately ran to their aid with umbrellas and towels and theme park merchandise to dress them in, as they had been soaked from the storm.
Here to tour with Rumba, the band were in the midst of their promotional schedule, but took some time out to pat the kangaroos and koalas at the theme park.
Liberty X were all dried out yesterday when they performed at the launch of the new Virgin Blue Terminal at Mascot airport. They will perform at ARQ nightclub tonight and on stage at Rumba tomorrow.
Liberty is Home Free After Loss
BRITISH pop act Liberty X might be losers but they are having the last laugh at the Rumba festival.
Courier Mail

By Nadine Ireland, Emma Chalmers
The fivesome lost the finals of the British Popstars competition last year but are on a high after headlining the Melbourne leg of the Rumba tour and seeing their debut album, Thinking It Over, going gold in the UK.
The band, Kevin Simm, 21, Tony Lundon, 22, Michelle Heaton, 22, Jessica Taylor, 21, and Kelli Young, 19, will perform for the first time in Brisbane at the local Rumba concert at Brisbane Entertainment Centre this afternoon before they play the Wickham Hotel in Fortitude Valley tonight.
Despite the pressure of closing the Melbourne festival, Lundon said band members were enjoying their relatively light schedule in Australia and would be home for Christmas.
"We don't really get to spend enough time with our loved ones,'' Lundon said.
The five London vocalists were promoted to headline act for the Melbourne show on Sunday night after following two of the drawcard performers, Pink and Bon Jovi.
Taylor said they were nervous about following such big names and "we're just grateful to the crowds for staying and listening to our music''.
Pink and Bon Jovi will close Brisbane's Rumba concert tonight with Jamaican reggae star Shaggy.
Liberty X will join fellow British exports the Sugababes and Abs, formerly of boy band Five, as well as locals Bachelor Girl, Disco Montego, Shakaya, Sophie Monk and Natalie Imbruglia for Brisbane's Rumba.
For fans heading to the concert today, there is plenty of other entertainment with the Rumba Mall featuring photo booths, technology, sports and an autograph stage. Budding models can also sign up for Girlfriend magazine's Cover Girl Model Search.
Organisers are expecting a sell-out for the show today which should attract about 12,000 fans.
Despite selling out the Entertainment Centre, total sales will be less than half the initial number of tickets promoters expected to sell when the festival was scheduled to be held at ANZ Stadium, where the capacity is 35,000.
In October, poor ticket sales and feedback from concert-goers worried about the December sun persuaded promoter, Austereo Live, to move the event to the Entertainment Centre.
The most recent Rumba gig in Melbourne on Monday night reportedly fell 10,000 short of the predicted 40,000 ticket sales.

Fans walk out on Rumba
The Daily Telegraph, Sydney Confidential
Wednesday 11 December 2002MELBOURNE was abuzz with Rumba rumblings following the concert on Sunday and it had nothing to do with Kelly Osbourne pulling the pin only a sneeze before she was due to appear.Instead it was the scheduling that had people talking, with most wondering why English pop act Liberty X closed the show - following crowd faves Bon Jovi.
"We don't know why we're coming on after Bon Jovi," a member of the fivesome apologetically told the crowd - who began filing out of the Telstra Dome in droves during their set.
A Rumba spokeswoman told Confidential the last act was scheduled to be Shaggy, but plans were changed at the last minute when the Brit had to immediately fly to Dubai for a show.
"The main act never closes - it's actually not the top slot," a music industry mole said.
Meanwhile, Pink didn't ingratiate herself with media types south of the border - even if she was red-hot on stage.
Apparently the diva-esque demands of her management were a little hard to stomach with the singer, whose real name is Alicia Moore, turning up half an hour late for her press conference - and then refused to answer any media questions and only wanted to be photographed.
When the singer arrived at local station Fox FM for her scheduled interview, management requested the station cut short the song that was then being broadcast and that they begin her chat session straight away so she wouldn't have to wait a minute longer.
Also a little on the shy side was Selwyn, who tried to avoid hysterical fans by heading backstage. But in true Beatle-esque fashion the singer found a handful of girls had broken through the curtained area.
One overzealous fan even grabbed his face and planted a kiss on his lips that even a Rich Girl would be proud of.
Popstars or Flopstars?
By Annabel Davidson
http://selector.soundsnz.com/
There are two things that stand out in a conversation with Tony Lundon from Liberty X. Firstly, he's Irish, and has an utterly irresistible voice - softly accented, gentle and quiet. Secondly, he's smart, in a quick-witted, worldly, generous sort of way. Not your usual popstar traits but there you have it. He's not you usual popstar.
Actually, Liberty X isn't your usual pop band. Where pop groups usually get together either independently or via an agent, this group's founding is an odd mixture of both. They were brought together through reality TV show UK Popstars and they did make it to the finals. In fact, the five members of Liberty X made up half of the 10 ultimate finalists. Only they didn't make it any further than that. "I knew I hadn't made it when they made me fly back to Ireland for the final cut and I had to pay for my own ticket," Tony recollects. "I was a bit pissed off about that. I didn't even want to go back home. I had things to do in London."
But he did go home where he heard what he expected to hear: he hadn't made it to the final five. What he had made, however, was a strong bond with the other four who missed out on the final selection: Kelli, Kevin, Michelle, and Jessica. "We were already mates and decided that after all that work and all that training, and all the talent and enthusiasm we had mustered, we should just go ahead and do our own thing. So we did," he explains.
Since then, Liberty X has had a multitude of hits and some serious chart success. And they know who they are. "We're a pop band, we know that," admits Tony. "And we also know people get frustrated with manufactured sounds and manufactured groups. But there will always be room for quality pop music. Plus, ours has a little soul."
Indeed, amidst the pop sounds of their music are generous helpings of R&B, soul and blues. It also helps that the band's main voice is that of Kelli Young, who has a sound to equal that of Mary J Blige or Toni Braxton. Which is probably why this pop group has had success outside the usual pre-teen girl market - not that that particular market hasn't had an effect on their success. "Kev and I went to the Westlife concert the other day and got right up near the front. When the boys cam out there was a lot of screaming and yelling and excitement but at one point I was actually in physical pain - some little girl screamed right in my ear. Some of those girls have real voices on them," he laughs. "But those girls are our audience too, and we know that."
With their album Thinking It Over making it to Number 1 on the UK charts, that's an audience to be grateful for.
CD Review- Thinking It Over
Herald Sun, Hit
Thursday 26 September 2002
By Cameron AdamsLiberty X Thinking It Over (V2/Zomba)
THE only vaguely cool band to come from the entire global Popstars concept, UK act Liberty X were wisely pushed into the cred end of the pop factory. Poppy two-step beats propelled the single Thinking it Over, but it was Just a Little that gave them a stone cold classic pop single. Breathtakingly good, there's nothing else as good here, but how could anything else compete. British street R&B beats (from generally up-and-coming producers) mix with a clever cover of Mantronix's house hit, Got to Have Your Love, and even their ballads don't suck that much. CA
The verdict: * * *
In a word: durable

By Cameron AdamsPOPSTARS hasn't had the greatest of track records when it comes to longevity. Bardot and Scandal'us have split, while British Popstars Hear'Say have suffered a dramatic drop in popularity.
The British Popstars show culled contestants to a final 10: two five-piece bands. When Hear'Say won, the other five were determined to keep going and joined Selwyn and Danielle Stearman as reject Popstars made good.
Calling themselves Liberty, they scored a record deal and two British hits. When they disappeared off the radar for a few months after a legal battle (leading to them becoming Liberty X) they regrouped and returned with a killer pop single, Just a Little. So good was it, it entered the charts at No. 1 in Britain two months ago -- sweet revenge for the band labelled Flopstars.
"The best thing that ever happened to us was telling us we weren't in the Popstars band," Liberty X's Kevin Simm says.
"At the time we were gutted, but in hindsight it was excellent. We weren't contracted to them, we wrote our own songs. It's been brilliant for our credibility." The week the single hit No. 1, British tabloids reported band members had been buying multiple copies of their own single.
"Three of the band bought two copies each, one of each format," Simm admits. "I didn't buy any because I was skint. But six copies isn't going to bump any sales. We sold 163,000 singles. And we were told by Boy George it's good luck to buy your own single. We just wanted it as a keepsake, with the price tag on it; we're quite sentimental."
Just a Little was turned down by Anastacia. "That was good for us," Simm says. With Just a Little in the Australian Top 30 Liberty X have broken into a market without being known from the UK Popstars show.
"We're happy to be judged on the music,'' Simm says. In the UK Popstars, the finalists were put through a fake media conference during which Liberty X's Jessica Taylor admitted smoking the odd joint: a no-no in manufactured pop.
"It was a big deal but she was honest and not many people are honest in this business. I think she got more respect than anything else," Simm says.
Liberty X may play at Rumba in December.

BELATED victory in Britain this week for Liberty X (right). They were the five who got to the final 10 in the UK's Popstars show, but were rejected. The winners became Hear'Say, who had two UK No. 1s but whose career is now faltering.
But Liberty X (they added the X after legal problems) had two Top 20 hits (Thinkin' It Over and Doin' It) after scoring their own record deal. Rather than rush out an album (Hear'Say released two albums within six months), they took their time and are now rewarded with a No. 1 hit.
Just a Little is released in Australia next month.
