Alan has embarked on a mission to clear the environmental weeds from the property. He generally concentrates on the areas we use extensively and is gradually extending into the more remote areas.
We refrain from using chemical poisons where possible and have never sprayed poisons. We occasionally use glysophate to kill large bushes or trees which have long fragile roots that break off and resprout. Wild tobacco and privet are the two species we have poisoned using the "cut and paint" method.
The more usual method is to clear the infested area of undergrowth using a brushcutter then dig the weed out, roots and all if possible, using a mattock. The debris is burnt if there is any chance it will restablish itself if left on the ground. Some regrowth usually occurs but this is weaker and can be redug readily.
