Biography
1978 A band named "Anthem" form at Fairfax High School, L.A. The Band comprises of bassist Michael Balzary (A.K.A. Flea, born 16/10/1962 in Melbourne, Australia), guitarist Hillel Slovak (born 13/4/1962 in Israel), and drummer Jack Irons (born 18/7/1962).
1983 Anthony Kiedis (born 1/11/1962) replaces vocalist Allen Misholski. They play an early show wearing the infamous socks over cocks as Tony Flow & The Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem.
April 1984 Debut, self-titled album released, The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
June 1985 The Red Hot Chili Peppers record second album and Freaky Styley is released.
August 1986 The band makes an appearance in a skate-punk flick called Thrashin'.
December 1987 The Uplift Mofo Party Plan is released. Includes such classics as "Behind The Sun" and "Me & My Friends".
May 1988 With socks on their cocks, The Peppers take the piss out of The Beatles with The Abbey Road EP.
June 25 1988 Hillel Slovak dies from a heroin overdose in L.A.
July 1988 Jack Irons quits. D. H. Peligro and Duane McKnight join. Things don't work out, but after auditioning 30 drummers, Chad Smith (born 25/10/1962) joins. Kiedis, currently a recovering junkie, meets young Chili Peppers fan John Frusciante (born 5/3/1970) and invites him to join.
September 1989 Mother's Milk is released and spends 8 months on U.S. charts. Includes "Knock Me Down" and "Higher Ground".
March 14 1990 Flea and Chad are arrested and plead guilty to sexually harassing a woman in Florida. Both are ordered to pay a fine and donate money to a rape crisis centre.
October 12 1991 Blood Sugar Sex Magik is released. The Album features classics such as "Under The Bridge", "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss".
May 7 1992 Half way through a Japanese Tour, Frusciante leaves the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Blood Sugar Sex Magik reaches #3 on the U.S. charts.
May 28 1992 Guitarist Zander Schloss rehearses with the band prior to the music festival, Lollapalooza.
July 1992 Arik Marshall joins, after Schloss leaves.
October 1992 Red Hot Chili Peppers Tour Australia and New Zealand.
July 1993 Marshall leaves and is replaced by Jesse Tobias.
August 1993 Jesse Tobias leaves.
September 1993 Jane's Addiction guitarist, Dave Navarro joins.
January 7 1994 An AIDS-prevention ad featuring Kiedis is dropped by the U.S. Government, after discovering he was convicted of battery and indecent exposure in 1989.
1995 One Hot Minute released, featuring "Aeroplane", "My Friends" and "Warped".
July 13 1997 Kiedis crashes his motorbike in L.A. He endures 5 hours of surgery, but ends up slipping back into his heroin addiction.
December 18 1997 Band cancels shows after it is confirmed that Dave Navarro is allegedly using hard drugs again.
April 1998 Navarro quits.
June 13 1998 Red Hot Chili Peppers perform at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington D.C., with John Frusciante fresh out of rehab and back in the band.
June 1999 The long-awaited Californication album is released. The single "Scar Tissue" climbs the charts.
January 2000 Flea's 80-something-year-old granny makes headlines after she fronts at the Melbourne Big Day Out. The Sydney show is stopped for 10 minutes due to crowd-surge.
July 2002 Red Hot Chili Peppers' eighth studio album, By The Way is released, and has reached five times platinum in Ireland and three times platinum in Australia as of January 2003.
