About Filmsoc
What is Filmsoc?

Here are some things that Filmsoc is not:
  • The Buffy Society
  • The student arm of the Bavarian Illuminati
  • Good for one free drink
  • A pony
  • Michael Jackson

We're here to encompass the good students of the University of Sydney (and others) to talk about, watch and make film, as well as have some fun on the way. Here at Filmsoc we strive to bring to you films that you haven't seen before, films that will affect you, will make you laugh, cry and talk about. We do not ensure that you like or enjoy all the films we screen, but chances are they're uber!

Each week on Fridays 5pm we show a film at RC Mills, sometimes the film will be preceeded by an assortment of short films, and it will usually be followed by a lively discussion. We also have two semesterly film competitions, social gatherings and other stuff.

Missed us during O-Week? Don't fret!

We like to think of ourselves as easygoing people (self-delusion is bliss), and if you're not a member already, all that you need to do to sign up is come to one of our screenings! If your only thoughts after the movie sound anything like:

'Man, that was a great movie. Also, who are all these weird people?'

Then seek out an exec, fork over five bucks, and enjoy an excellent selection of movies for the rest of the year. Don't forget to give us your e-mail address so you never miss a screening*. We won't bite. We won't even gnaw longingly**!

However, if you can't wait to get to know us, email us at usydfilmsoc@gmail.com!

History

1973

January 1, 1979: The University of Sydney Film Society is founded by Professor Peter McFilmsoc.

1982

Also known as the "Year of Four Presidents". The first President of 1982 was assassinated whilst driving down Barff Road in an open-top car. The second was ousted by a coup led by a wild bunch of left wing hippy wierdo's. The third resigned after being impeached for embezling society money (it was later discovered that the money was being channelled to Cuba where it was used to support the country's ailing dental system). The fourth and last President of 1982 choked to death on an abnoramlly large corn cernel whilst watching "Ghandi", which, incedently, went on to win the Oscar™ for "Best Picture" later that year. The period that followed was marred by a brief moment of civil unrest, but soon gave way to a new era of peace and prosperity.

1985

The mafia gains a controlling majority in the FilmSoc executive and turns the society into a front for drug trafficing and money laundering.

2003

FilmSoc is placed under round-the-clock surveillence after being listed by the Howard Government as a possible terrorist organisation.

2004

January 1: FilmSoc's 25th Anniversary. Celebrations erupt all over the world. Unfortunately they are for the begining of the New Year. Three people attend the FilmSoc 25th Anniversary Party, which was held in Stephen Bakopanos's garage.

2005

January: Filmsoc makes its first "digital" release, "I Know What You Did In That Glebe Share-House Last Summer", starring Billy Stevenson. Rave reviews have accompanied its release - "two thumbs up!" says Honi Soit, "a movie that really points the finger at what is happening over there", says the Union Recorder. A sequel, "Finger Lickin' Good", is currently in the works. We caught up with Billy last week. He called the experience 'surreal', adding that his co-star, Some Random Gay Guy, was perfect for the role. Though Billy is apprehensive when asked about the whole filming experience - "it sucked", he said, "I felt like I was in a big black hole... it was really hard for me". Audiences have raved about the film's warm ending. "It really sticks with you", said one audience's member.

2006

After a very long march from Manning our glorious leader Chen Chi Qui formed a peasant and workers army and took the FilmSoc leadership by force. After many failed attempts to change the title from president to chairman, he instigated the 'hundred films campaign' where he tried to discover the reactionary factions of the party, set up the cult of Wong Kar Wai and permanently change FilmSoc into 'The People's Asian-Film-Loving FilmSoc'. However because he discovered campos and was high on coffee the day of the campaign, it failed miserably and he was forced to flee to Cuba where he set up a book store to sell little red coloured books. After returning to retake FilmSoc so he could instigate his 'fairly large leap forward' he was toppled by Anthony Krensel and was forced to retire as a gardener.
