MAYO LANCERS SET
This set comes from the Mayo area, and is published in Pat
Murphy's "The Flowing Tide" (pp.121-123).
Newcastle Irish Set Dancers was first introduced to this dance in a workshop
conducted by Cíarán Condron in May, 2001 in Sydney.
Other published instructions for this dance may differ slightly.

 Formation
Set of four couples, Gents on the left of their partners. The
Top Couples have their backs to the band or face the band. The two
Couples facing the side walls are Side Couples.
The Jig figures use a 'Down' Jig described in
the Steps section below.

STEPS
'Down' Jig
The Jig figures use a 'down' Jig, similar to the Polka Step. The
Ladies start on the right, Gents start on the left:

Sevens and Threes
In Set dancing 'Sevens' are danced with the weight
taken on the lead foot stamping forward followed with a push from
the rear foot [repeated with 4 stamps and 3 pushes, and-Stamp-push-stamp-push-stamp-push-stamp].
The lead foot is lightly bent, but the centre of gravity of the
body will be over this foot. On the first part of a 'Sevens' (dance
to the centre, or the first and third parts of the diamond shape)
Ladies lead with the Right foot and Gents lead with the Left. The
second part of a 'Sevens' (returning to place or the second and
fourth part of the diamond shape) Ladies lead with the left foot,
Gents with the right.
'Threes' are danced on alternate feet as and-123-and-123
and follow a sequence of Sevens.
The sequence is: and-1234567-and-123-and-123-and-1234567-and-123-and-123
Ladies: and-RLRLRLR-and-LRL-and-RLR-and-LRLRLRL-and-RLR-and-LRL
Gents:
