Newcastle and Hunter Valley Folk Club.

Handy Hints for Beginners

We're always happy to have new dancers. Your first night is FREE!

Our group is has a fairly informal atmosphere and we adjust what we do to accommodate whoever is coming along. If you are new to our group it is very helpful to confirm that you are coming so we can tailor our program to suit.

Our classes start at 7:15pm. New dancers need to be prompt as we usually start with helpful hints for beginners, footwork for the dances in the class, etc..

Dances suitable for newer dancers continue until about 8:45, but everyone is welcome to stay and watch the more experienced dancers work through more complicated dances until about 9:15.

Shoes should be smooth-soled street shoes (or preferably leather-soled), as rubber-soled shoes stick to the floor making it difficult to dance.

We ask newer dancers to dance with more experienced dancers as this allows them to guide you in the various movements, and helps you learn timing, etc. We ask everyone to share in sitting out when we have extra dancers. We will repeat figures as necessary to make sure everyone gets a chance to learn the movements.

If driving park in the Level 2 car park at Charlestown Square (entry from the lights at the cnr of Ferris and Frederick Sts). The duration of the class will allow you free parking (for up to 3 hours).Make sure you don't lose your parking ticket or they'll charge you for a full days' parking!

Classes are $10 per night (or $8 if a member of the Newcastle & Hunter Valley Folk Club).
