Common Blocks to Achievement
Most often what impedes the achievement
of goals is a lack of confidence that prevents you from thinking big
(having ambition or goals), or thwarts your ability to sustain effort
over time, such as by procrastination or not trying.
Sometimes there are negative thoughts or emotions that undermine your
motivation or goal setting, such as fear of taking risks due to fear
of failure or disapproval.
In both cases, attitudes arising from childhood
may be important contributors. This is because formative experiences
in childhood can contribute to
deep-seated negative feelings and beliefs about oneself and/or the world.
These beliefs act as “templates” that shape our perceptions
and influence our actions. Individuals may have a “can do” attitude,
or an absence of such, a belief that they can get what they want, or
alternatively, that the world is an inherently frustrating place.
Modifying the types of attitudes and beliefs that undermine confidence
and the ability to succeed can arise spontaneously by taking risks and
achieving success. They can also be tackled through professional counselling
and coaching.
