We're Going Wrong (Jack Bruce) Unichappell Music (BMI)
This
moody track was in Creams second album “Disraeli Gears” which was released in
December of 1967 . The album peaked the UK charts at number 5 and the US charts
at number 4.
Comments
by a recent entry in the “Express” was that We’re Going Wrong was so much better live than on vinyl. The
relevance of the song is that it is truly a Jacks Track as he not only composed
the music but by also wrote the lyrics and the song is now one of the latest
set additions to Jacks current live performances with the Cuicoland Express.
Jack maybe road testing the song for the second of the anticipated trilogy of
albums with the Cuicoland Express. It’s an interesting inclusion as to the best
of my knowledge We’re Going Wrong has not been part of Jack’s live sets over
the years , but I can only imagine (at this stage) that it lends itself well to
the current Latin sound with other moody exceptional songs such as Heart Quake
and Dark Heart.
By
the notes in the Those Were The Days 4 CD set , The words came to Jack whilst
out walking and made reference that the lyrics may have been about what was
going on at the time but was really about love.
The
Cream version is a mould of Jacks pleading vocals fused with Gingers tom tom patterns and Erics “woman
tone” guitar solo. The so called “woman tone”
sound was achieved by removing all the treble from the tone controls on
the guitar and either turning both pick ups full on or just using the rhythm
pickup only. Typical of the non pop formulas of the day the song is in 6 / 4
timing.
We’re Going Wrong’s repeated subtle bass pattern
combine nicely with the heavy rhythm guitar with the song building in emotion
to its conclusion at 3 minutes 29 seconds.
Another
classic song from a classic album. I hadn’t played Disraeli Gears for ages
until recently when it reinstalled my views of what an important role We’re
Going Wrong must have had in the success of the album.
