JUNE – JULY
|
Between 1994 & 2003 those interested in
serious competition headed off to Mildura in NW Victoria, on the mighty Murray River,
Australia’s "Big River". National Championships
and major Pacific regional and world class events were held in Mildura every
second year, including the World Championship in 2004. In 2007 the Nationals were held in Benalla in NE Victoria and
might be held there for some years to come.
Most ballooning contests involve using the available breezes to fly to a target and dropping a weighted ribbon marker is a substitute for landing. Left One of my better marker drops, Mildura. Right The AGFA balloon on the beach on the Murray River. (Photo Les Springett) |

LAKE MUNGO In 1997 after the competition flying was over, six of the balloons went 120km to the Lake Mungo National Park to fly over the dramatic "Walls of China", a sand dune and clay cliff where ancient human fossils have been found.
