Beginnings

The idea for an Adventure Playground was formed in March 2000 through research conducted by the " Living Neighbourhood ® " project in Christies Beach. After an initial public meeting a committee was formed and a non-profit incorporated body was initiated with the sole purpose of planning and building the playground.

Leathers and Associates a US company who had helped over 1500 communities world wide to create similar projects were chosen to guide the project. The architect from Leathers visited on the design day on December 7 2001. He went to three schools, Port Noarlunga, Christies Beach and Seaford where he developed a schematic plan from the ideas generated by the 600 children that he spoke with. At an evening public meeting he explained the concept of designing and building the playground. Leathers and Associates have an extensive webpage, which is well worth a visit.

Tourism Week 2002 City of Onkaparinga - Target 2002 Volunteers. The actual construction will involve over 2000 volunteers. The finance is being raised through sponsorships and donations. The target is $250,000 and 2002 volunteers for Tourism Week. Current funds raised are $150,000. The City of Onkaparinga and the Department of Recreation and Sport have committed funds to the cause.

The finished project will be of great benefit to our community. It will give an added dimension to tourism in our city (the construction phase will be achieved during Tourism Week 2002) and is a first for South Australia. Provision will be made to cater for children with disabilities. Part of the area will be a rubber ground cover suitable for wheel chair access and special equipment will be installed to accommodate these needs.
