The Adaptation in Film Form: How it Compares

This is a follow-up of your viewing at home of Jane Austen's Emma in video (DVD) form, to make comparisons with novel. You have been advised to take notes, especially if you are intending to use the film as a reference in your major assignment. You might also consider hiring a copy of the 'modern adaptation' Clueless, to view as a comparison.

This lesson will extend your understanding of narrative within Emma and build on critical thinking and critical literacy by providing adaptation through video to compare and contrast with the novel, and build on links concerning story sequence, theme, and characterisations.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. STUDENTS ARE TO EMAIL COMPARATIVE COMMENTS ON THE FILM AS RELATED TO THE NOVEL, COMMENTING ON AT LEAST 3 SCENES IN THE FILM ; and STUDENTS ARE ALSO TO COMMENT BRIEFLY (100 WORDS) ON TWO OTHER STUDENT'S CRITIQUES OF THE OPENING AND CLOSING SCENES OF THE NOVEL (FROM PREVIOUS LESSON - WILL BE POSTED BY TEACHER).

2. OPEN AND READ THE ATTACHED QUESTIONS ON THE NOVEL AND FILM AND SUBMIT NO LATER THAN 24 HOURS AFTER THIS LESSON.

3. DOWNLOAD HOMEWORK, FOR COMPLETION BY NEXT LESSON.

Homework:

Write a 300-350 word biography of one character including background to their lives, but concentrating on how their life progressed in Emma, including how they 'ended up'. How well developed was this character and was the character believable? Did you like or dislike the character? The character needs to be one in the story enough for their character to be analysed (e.g. Emma Woodhouse, George Knightley, Mr Woodhouse, Harriet Smith, Mr Elton, Mrs Elton, Frank Churchill). Students can scan photo from book and use a diagram from Microsoft Word 'gallery' (circle with arrows icon in the standard toolbar) to indicate main relationships of the character either at beginning or end of narrative (must state which).
