In this lesson we will review Jane Austen's biography briefly,
to aid critical literacy through understanding social context by having and
using background knowledge resources (Freebody & Luke).
We will also recompose narrative contained within the novel
to draw out themes and characterisation regarding 3 main characters, and answer
a series of questions relating the progression of the Emma story to the narrative
context, to reinforce our knowledge of the storyline and themes, and the interrelationship
of the characters.
Further, we will extend our understanding of the story sequence before viewing the film as whole, in order to make comparisons based on thorough knowledge.
INSTRUCTIONS:

Homework:
Compose a 250 word critique on either the opening or the
final scene and how well it either introduces story or closes story, to be
emailed to tutor.
For the opening scene, consider does it effectively engage us and introduce
us to characters, leading us to be interested in their lives - if so, how
(with examples from the text)?
For the closing scene, does it tie together the different story strands satisfactorily?
If so, why? If not, why not?
In their answer students are encouraged to give both positive and negative
appraisal (e.g. if they thought the ending was 'too neat' and everybody too
perfectly happy, why?). Students must justify comments.
