The Geelong Manufacturing Council was established in 1998 through a partnership between the Australian Chamber of Manufactures, (now the Australian Industry Group), the Geelong Development Board and the City of Greater Geelong.

The GMC is a non-political not for profit group supported by its industry partners who have shown confidence in the region as a manufacturing centre. The GMC lobbies on behalf of the region's industry and undertakes a number of strategic programs including facilitating industry networks.
The Geelong Manufacturing Council is a forum where manufacturing industry issues are presented, discussed and if required issues addressed pertaining to the future of manufacturing in the region. The Council works closely with the AiGroup, Australia’s foremost national manufacturing industry body.
Some of the projects developed have included the formation of CARnet, Geelong Automotive Industry, Geelong Textile Network, Environment Managers' Network, and projects involving reducing industrial waste and improving future sustainability. Seminars and industry days are also facilitated by the GMC.
A major area of focus has become encouraging and assisting region industry to reduce waste and improving productivity, program supported by Sustainability Victoria. Developing Industrial Synergies within the region has also become a major area of focus.
The GMC has the objectives of working with industry to strengthen and support the region's manufacturing sector through building confidence and broadening the industry base.
Improving the image of manufacturing is an important area of focus with efforts to develop stronger links with education, business community and government.
