Family of Thomas Shoubridge                             Home

Born:

Christened 24 April 1826

St Mary's, Horsham

Occupation:

bricklayers labourer

He and his family were living at 188 Normandy Rd, Horsham in 1861 and at other times lived at Bishopric. He was not married to Mary until possibly after 1871.
According to different census records he was:

1851:               Married but living with his parents

1861:               Living with Mary and childrenHis brother-in-law James Vowls, 30, was living with them.

1871:               Living with Mary Voules and children but listed as an unmarried  lodger

1881 and 1891:Living with wife Mary and children

Because James was born James Vowls in a workhouse and his father is not named on his birth certificate, it is possible that Thomas was an adoptive father rather than the natural father. This is probably true for Thomas Jnr as well. Several brothers were called Vowls. The younger the children of this family the more likely it is that Thomas Snr was the father. Thomas and Mary must have become a couple some time in the 1850’s.

It is possible that he married Maria Dinnage in June 1848 (International Geneological Index information) but separated and could not marry Mary.

His grandsons Bill and Tom (sons of James) remembered visiting  him. Since they were born after 1891 Thomas must have lived to a good age.

Wife:   Mary Vowles

Born:

1835

Horsham

Occupation:

shoebinder, charwoman

Her name is spelt as Vowls on her children’s birth certificates. She could not sign her name. There are several children of Mary Vowles christened at Horsham. They were:

Thomas Henry              Christened 25/12/1852

Frederick          Christened 25/6/1864

Charles             Christened 11/11/1864

James                           Christened 11/11/1864

Mary Jane                    Christened 30/7/1871

William             Christened 30/7/1871

In 1841 Mary was living with her grandfather James Briggs (40, a shoemaker) Mary (60) Henry (30), Mary (25), William (20) Briggs and her brother James Vowles (10). James was the son of Mary Vowls so this must be Mary's mother also. No father is mentioned in the IGI record. In 1861 and 1871 James Briggs was a lodger in Staines, London and Reigate, Surrey. In 1881 he was in the Horsham Union Workhouse. James parents were James and Sarah.
