Chocolate Chip Cookies - Chocolate chip cookies are one of the most popular cookie recipes ever. Historically, the scrumptious cookie was whipped up one day in the kitchen of Massachusetts inn owner, Ruth Wakefield, in 1930. She added small chunks of Nestlé’s Semisweet Chocolate Bar to her basic butter cookie dough and the rest is history. The cookies became an immediate success, and the guests of the Toll House Inn couldn’t quit raving about this awesome new recipe. Soon Nestle heard about Wakefield’s combination and in 1939 purchased the rights to use the recipe for “the Famous Toll House Cookie”, which was placed on every bag of Nestlé’s Semisweet Chocolate Chips. To this day, this cookie is reportedly America’s favorite! Visit www.joyofbaking.com to read more including the original chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Not every chocolate cookie recipe is created equal. There are many variations of the basic recipe and they all vary by taste and texture. Baking the perfect cookie can present a challenge because of variations in essential ingredients, like baking soda and baking powder. And of course, the addition of various ingredients can alter the final outcome as well. The traditional recipe featured on the Nestlé’s packaging comes complete with variations for drop or pan cookies, and high altitude adjustments for the perfect cookie. Most any kind of nut can be also be added, or other ingredients such as oatmeal, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, or white chocolate chips. But in my humble opinion, there is nothing better than the original Toll House recipe. It’s a timeless classic that our mother’s made and we made for our kids. Pour a glass of milk and enjoy the taste of a freshly baked home made chocolate chip cookie.
