Kitchen Equipment - My daughter is about to move into her first home. She has been married for two years and is expecting her first child. She and her husband have been living in an apartment, but have now purchased a home to raise their child in. The home is in a very nice neighborhood and is about a forty five minute drive from our home. I think this is an ideal distance. We will not be so close that we are at each others home all the time, yet not so far that we need to stay over night when visiting. My daughter is very excited about decorating her home.
My daughter and her husband have very good taste. They are going to be in a suburb, which will be an adjustment for them. They now live in a downtown area of a large city so they are used to picking up take out food or getting ingredients for a particular recipe. They are not used to shopping for a week at a time which they will now have to do because the distance they will be from shops. My daughter told me that she is going to have to invest in some kitchen equipment because at this time they do very little cooking at home. When they were married they did not pick out items for the kitchen for their gift registry because of the limited cooking that they do. Now that my daughter is planning her family and is more settled she wants to cook more. This is going to mean buying some kitchen equipment.
My daughter knows that I enjoy cooking. She used to watch me prepare meals for our family when she was growing up. She would help out with some of the tasks, but she never had an interest in cooking. She asked me to go shopping with her to help find kitchen equipment for their new home.
We started by looking at a new stove top for their house. We also bought pots and pans as well as an array of utensils. My daughter was looking at all the different gadgets that are on the market for kitchen equipment. I explained to her that the gadgets take up counter and shelf space and that I have found that they take more time to dig out and clean after their use than they save. I encouraged her to spend money on a good set of knives and to forget all the choppers and other kitchen equipment that is suppose to shorten cooking time. We also signed up for some basic cooking classes to take together. It will be a fun way to spend time together and to hopefully learn new tips.
