Performers in the November 2008 Concert

The Rosewood Project:

Rosewood Project Inspired by Maree Robertson’s Music Making for Mental Health Project, this combo (with Maree on lead vocals, accompanied by multi-instrumentalists Ann Bermingham & Helen Rowe), harks back to the days of good old-fashioned country folk. With tender melodies, sultry-sweet harmonies, & life affirming songs that will delight you, they pack a punch, delivered in a velvet glove.

Nadia Sunde:     www.myspace.com/nadiasunde

Nadia Nadia is well known around Australia as one of the best singers on the Festival circuit. A stint as lead singer & bass player with Spot the Dog gave Nadia a great musical apprenticeship. Nadia's songs project images that are sometimes touching, sometimes funny and always loving. They are songs that move audiences deeply, leaving them with a sense there is good in the world.
With her band The Wishful Sinners Nadia's musical styling moves across country, through folk, into rock and on into something unique that is completely her own. Prepare to move and be moved!

Mary Fletcher:

Mary Fletcher Mary Fletcher is a Brisbane-based singer/song writer with a passion for social justice. Born into a musical family, music has always been part of her life, launching into the Toowoomba folk music scene in the 1980's. Mary began a solo performance career playing at various festivals and club gigs, and later, upon her move to Brisbane, joined the renowned group, Tangled Web. When this band disbanded, Mary was with Brisbane group Pilgrim, and then more recently Bessie. Mary directs and performs with her own group of busy young singers, eCCCos, which has produced 2 CD's of original material, written by Mary for young people. Mary enjoys performing solo or with others whenever opportunity arises!

Jeremiah    home.iprimus.com.au/bellmassage

Jeremiah 4 piece (Cathy Bell, Dan Grant, Mark Cryle & Richard Evans). The Courier Mail described Jeremiah as exploring the roots-rock tradition which passes on through Steve Earle and Australian songwriters such as Mick Thomas and Shane Howard. Their music is comfortably familiar yet completely fresh, combining a respect for the past with a desire to say something new. The sound is stripped back and intimate, making use of fiddle, accordion, mandolin and threadbare acoustic guitar – music made for the back verandah.

KEEP THE KETTLE BOILING (at Mapleton)

Steve Morgan
I’ll tell of the Red Kettle Folk Club that meet upon the mount.
They’ve been going for some many years, they can't remember they lost count.
They think that it’s ten years or so (but they haven’t got a clue).
They’re a pretty rough and ready mob, the old Red Kettle crew.
Chorus: But they’ve kept the kettle boiling

For ten long years of fun and song kept the kettle boiling
Yea they kept the kettle boiling
You can bring along a song or tale, or maybe a poem or two.
A banjo, mandolin, a flute, or maybe a kazoo.
You can sing about a bushranger, tell tale about a Ute.
Or sing of watching the Obi flow, the Kettle don’t give a hoot

Ch

The fourth Sunday by the Lily Ponds it’s the only place to be.
The Kettle mob are kicking on, They’ve finally found the key
The people come from miles around to join the tune full fray,
And lie around soak up the sun until the break of day.

Ch, - Except last line : (Yea they kept the kettle boiling)

Aussie Tune Session

Quite a few people passed comment on the fact that there were very few Trad Australian Tunes (or songs) at Woodford this year. Rose and Terry (Jacob) tried to start a few sessions but the knowledge base of tunes wasn't there. There was plenty of trad irish and american tunes (and very good they were too !), however not much of our own music.

We'll take it slowly to start with and see how we go, Rose and Terry can teach a few of the lesser known tunes.

Hope to see you there

CALLING ALL SESSIONERS

The entity currently known as The Saturday Session has a long and glorious history. Revellers tell of white-hot Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings at the Carlton Crest in the 70s, and the New Exchange Hotel in the early 80s. After several years calling the Story Bridge home, then a period exiled to a tent in the backyard (ie. the car park) early this century, the session moved to the Broadway in Woolloongabba. A few weeks ago, it made yet another epic migration, to join its close mate the Mad Ass Acoustic Music Club at the Muddy Farmer Hotel on the corner of Ipswich and Annerley Roads, Annerley.

Muddy but cheerful, The Saturday Session is enjoying a lively regular crowd with diverse musical tastes, styles and instruments. But there's always room for more! Melding songs, tunes, unaccompanied singing, poems, and the occasional spontaneous Morris dance (yes, absolutely), the session welcomes musicians of all levels of skill and experience. Please spread the word!

Variety being the spice of life, we are trialing the concept of themed sessions - a bit like the Singing Shed at Woodford. On the first Saturday of each month, the FIRST HOUR will be orchestrated by a Guest Session Leader, who will lead and encourage songs about a theme. If you'd like a turn as Guest Session Leader, or have a suggestion for a theme, please contact Don Jarmey on 0437-332-871.

We are thrilled to have Mary Brettell and Anne Infante hosting Gospel and Spirituals on 3rd March. Future treats include the Logan men leading Scottish Songs, and members of the Pirate Brides facilitating Verandah Songs - come and check it out.

- Andrea Baldwin

Are you listed in the Australian Folk Directory?

Folk Alliance Australia is about to re-publish the Australian Folk Directory. The directory lists folk performers, venues, festivals, clubs, agents, service providers, instrument makers etc... and is accessible at the FAA website as well as in print. Listing is free, and provided as a service to the Australian Folk Community. This message is being sent to existing Directory entries, FAA members past and current, and participants in the Ausworld folk and radio lists. We seek all your assistance to publicise the impending re-print. We aim to make the directory as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible. Are you listed? Should you be listed? Go to the FAA website to check your entry or to submit a new entry.

LISTING IS FREE Please tell all your folk contacts about this and encourage them to be listed. If you run a club, venue or radio show, please give this initiative whatever publicity you can. We are also seeking some volunteers in each state to assist with checking and updating directory entries. If you can help us, please let us know. If you would like to advertise in the Folk Directory, please contact Dieter at Please help your folk community to prosper. FAA is a not for profit organisation, and sales of the Australian Folk Directory are used to offset the cost of production.
