FEBRUARY SPECIAL GUESTS

FEBRUARY 8th - Sue Tanner and Paul Cannon. Red Hill Folk favourites Sue (guitar, vocals) and Paul (guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals) are now based on the Sunshine Coast. They’ve been playing music together for 17 years. They play Paul’s original songs and tunes, as well as folk (‘you're too country for folk’) and country (‘you're too folk for country’). Current influences are Gillian Welsh, The Wailing Jennys, Buffy St Marie, and Ricky Scaggs!  Last year Paul released a CD Rhythm of a Dream showcasing some of his own material.

FEBRUARY 22th - Rhys Owen. Since the 1960s, Rhys has been playing music in and around folk clubs as a soloist, a much-appreciated backing guitarist and a member of some excellent bands, which are still remembered nostalgically. Now based in Crows Nest, he is one of our most talented and well-respected musicians. For the past few years he and his wife Linzi have been writing great songs together of their times and times-gone-by. Rhys says, We have lived our lives with the music; come and say ‘hi’ and listen to our view of life in these times.

We have many fine regular performers every Wednesday night - so come down and join us.

Set against harmonies and the mellow sound of ukulele, Yellow Bird combines stringed, wind and percussive instruments. MALENY'S

FIRST SATURDAY FOLK

7:15pm at the UPFRONT CLUB, Maple Street, MALENY
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 4

After a well-earned break over Christmas, Maleny's monthly folk night begins 2012 on February 4 with a guest from Byron Bay - Steve Tyson, accompanied by his long-time musical sidekick Dave Parnell. Steve has been a fixture in the Australian music scene for close on 40 years. His early bands Gentle Art and Spike played Brisbane's underground blues and R&B clubs while he was still at school.  In later years, he performed with two bands, Rough Red and twentysevens, released nine albums over the past 15 years and toured extensively in Europe.

Last year he released Temple Dog, a collection of 12 original songs inspired by a period spent living in Paris in 2009, sitting in cafes pretending to be Ernest Hemingway.  Steve describes the album as a walk through my musical sub-consciousness, and a personal reflection of his extensive travels throughout exotic locations such as India, Russia, Japan, Bhutan, and Vietnam. Temple Dog received warm reviews in The Australian and The Courier-Mail.

In December there were also surprise appearances by Dermot Dorgan and Chanel Lucas, as well as featured guests Brisbane's Mark Davidson & Friends.

Admission is $5 and includes a ticket in 3 lucky draws.

First Saturday Folk starts at 7.15pm at the UpFront Club, 31 Maple Street, Maleny. Admission is $5 and includes a ticket in 3 lucky door prizes.
For a 10-minute blackboard spot, to book or see Bob or Laurel on the night.

RED KETTLE STILL ON THE BOIL

by Jackie Bridle

On the scenic banks of the Lilyponds, away from the hustle and bustle, above the clouds, in Mapleton, the Red Kettle Folk Club is still on the Boil after some 14 years. Musician Mark Gillett (deceased) and poet Jackie Bridle, along with a group of devoted friends began the folk club as a social gathering for musicians, poets and like minded people. Over the years people have come and gone and the venue changed but the Red Kettle Folk Club has always been.

These days a marquee and sound system is set up by Steve Morgan & friends at the back of Fish Tales, a restaurant situated on the corner of Delica rd and Obi Obi rd Mapleton. On the 4th Sunday of each month from 2pm, musicians' poets and friends arrive from near and far to perform at the black board venue, socialise and be entertained.

Jackie has returned to Mapleton and continues to perform her humorous and thought provoking poems while Mark's presence is often felt as his friends spontaneously sing out one of Marks prolific creations. Sugar Town, Little England or the famous award winning song, Watch the Obi Flow, which was created when he performed with the Hinterland Band.
