summer edition is now online

The Summer quarterly edition of Warren Fahey's BODGIE NEWS is now available online. This editions also features re-directions to two very important collections of Australian Folklore.

The Clive Carey Collection of Australian sea shanties - the words to over 66 sea shanties taken down on Kangaroo Island in 1923 - this is the largest collection of sea songs sung on the Australian run and an exciting addition to the site.

Ange Takats releases debut album - Aniseed Tea

Blend the sounds of American folk music from the early seventies with the ramblings of a gypsy girl from Oz, add spoonfuls of Brisbane's finest musicians and the result is Aniseed Tea.

This debut album from Queensland-based songstress Ange Takats harks back to a time when lyrics mattered, melodies were intricate and songs gave listeners something to sip on.

Winner of the 2008 Lis Johnston Award for vocal excellence at the National Folk Festival, Ange penned the album at her seaside apartment on the Sunshine Coast during a 12 month period. Brisbane's Adrian Mauro recorded and produced the album, with some of the country's finest musicians adding their talents to the brew. The tracks were then sent to the UK where they were mixed by Australian engineer Ben Tolliday at Frou Frou Central in London (recent projects include Alanis Morissette and Jackie Marshall).

The album features the following players: Adrian Mauro (The Black Alles Band), Ben Tolliday (Trinkets), Greg Cathcart (The Black Alles Band/Speedstar), Richard Johnston (The Black Alles Band/Speedstar), Robbie Long (The Lawnmowers/Kate Fagan/ Liz Frencham), Andrew Maddick (English Symphony Orchestra), Beck Flatt (Loren).

Tracks: My Song, Weary, Tip Toes, Knitters Curse, Good Woman, Barry, Brown Shoes, Love Always Leaves, Angie.

The Northern Suburbs Country Music Club is made up of a group of country music enthusiasts who gather together to share their passion of music, encouraging and supporting each other on their musical journeys.

There is always a variety of talented musicians who form backing bands for the singers or you may see solo artists working at perfecting their acoustic performances. That’s the beauty of the club, all forms of music and talent are welcomed and appreciated. The night normally ends with a fun, laid back jam session which includes all those who wishes to participate.

The Northern Suburbs Country Music Club is currently looking for musicians and singers of all abilities and ages who would like to work with other music lovers or just gain more performance experience in a fun, family friendly environment.

INTERVIEWERS NEEDED

The Brisbane Folk History Project needs you! Can you spare an hour or so to interview one or two folkies? We provide the questions and the voice recorder - you just encourage the interviewee to tell their story. You don't have to write notes or type anything up - interviews are being professionally transcribed from the recordings. Our current interviewers are finding this a fascinating way to enjoy someone's company while learning interesting things about the history of the Brisbane folk scene. You can volunteer to interview a friend, or a friend you haven't met yet. We have a list, and we're also open to suggestions.

We're keen to hear from volunteer interviewers and interviewees. If you'd prefer to fill out a questionnaire than be interviewed, or if you want to know the questions before putting your hand up, the questionnaire is available online at:

www.brisbane.folkhistory.org

We're running out of time to acquit our Brisbane City Council grant and we really need all hands on deck now to create an awesome book and DVD of Brisbane folk history.

Thanks for your help!
