The Kookaburra Folk Club is held every Wednesday night from 7:30pm upstairs at the Kookaburra Café, 280 Given Tce, Paddington, Brisbane. There is no entry fee, the cafe is licensed and good food is served all night.

The club is strictly (well, usually) acoustic and is a mostly chalkboard event. Occasionally we feature specially invited guest performers and floor singers are always welcome and encouraged. Singing starts at 8pm sharp with a set from The Wayfarers, the club’s resident group, and continues until 11pm.

Special Guest Performer for May

May 14th – Dermot Dorgan. We’re delighted to welcome Dermot (the Cappuccino Junkie) back to the Kookaburra Folk Club. A brilliant writer of songs satirical, political and planetary, Dermot’s performances are sharp, funny, thought-provoking and always greatly enjoyable.

If you would like to perform any Wednesday, bring your instrument and your voice; or just come up to the Kookaburra Folk Club to listen to our many excellent regular artists, special guests and visiting performers.

Warwick Folk Club

Sunday 23 April was a perfect Autumn day, and the beer garden at O’Mahony’s Heritage Hotel was the ideal setting for the concert to celebrate Bill Scott’s life and works.

Over 100 people settled in to share a musical experience which went on long past the advertised finishing time.

First up were Penny Davies and Roger Ilott, ably supported by their multi-talented son Jordy. Their love and friendship for Bill flowed out with every note as they sang his songs and spoke his words. Songs from their Opal Miner CD (surely one of the most listenable CDs ever recorded!) had the rapt audience laughing, clapping and, at times close to tears, at what was truly a fantastic tribute to the many years of musical collaboration between Bill, Penny and Roger.

Mavis Scott then read from some of Bill’s unpublished correspondence with many people from all around the world. His response to the question put to him “What is folk music?” including the line “Folk music can be any song that has been sung at least once”, should be framed and hung on the wall of every folk club in the country!Mavis accepted a plaque which, together with a photo of Bill, will grace the Warwick Folk Club, and be a permanent reminder of a gentle and generous “Folkie Friend”.

Max Jarrott caused much amusement with his rendition of a bush poem about a boundary rider and a goanna, with the help of a large fabric lizard and Bob Townshend posing as an old gum tree. Relinquishing his role as “an old gum tree” Bob sang a few of his favourite songs, posing as an “old folk singer”.

Julie McGonigal came next and sang ever so sweetly and hammered on her dulcimer – though why its called “hammer” when her touch is like velvet and produces ethereal music box sounds - was a mystery to most of the listeners.

Visitors from Brisbane were welcomed to the stage next, Mary Bretell and Don Nichols may not have travelled up in Mary’s “Toyota Corolla” but when she sang about it the audience loved it. Don’s version of Tony Miles’ “Convict Song” was really fantastic and brought goose-bumps to the listeners. Both singly and together they produced some marvellous music and we were fortunate that they made the journey to join in the celebration.

By now the finishing time of 5.30 pm was approaching, as was the cool of the evening, so we adjourned to the restaurant and the music went on. Local singer/songwriter, Terry Clarke, led off the resumed concert and his version of “Ben Hall” was as good a rendition as you’d hear in a long day’s journey. Another talented Warwick folkie, Sue York, whose crystal clear voice doesn’t need any musical assistance, sang unaccompanied to a spell bound audience.

To round off the official concert another traveller from Brisbane, Ian Clarke, forsaking the “Kooka and the Wayfarers” happily performed some of his mournful songs!

By about 7 pm the 5.30 pm finishing time was finally reached but no one wanted to stop so a ceilidh circle was formed and the music flowed for another hour or so before everyone had sung themselves to a standstill.

All in all a wonderful tribute to a wonderful man! And fear not dear reader, if you missed out don’t panic – such was the enthusiasm for the celebration that, with Mavis’ blessing, we will be doing it all again next year. So be ready to make a pilgrimage to Warwick in April 2007 to celebrate and acknowledge the life and works of Folkie legend, Bill Scott.

Bob Townshend

The Folk Rag Monies would like to thank Bob and Vicki for providing us with a wonderful venue and some great entertainment and also for for donating money raised to the Folk Rag.

Warwick is a pleasant 2 hour drive from Brisbane and if anyone would like to bring instruments and voices and overnight on Saturday, O’Mahony’s have bags of accommodation at very reasonable rates then we could have a pre-concert gathering on Saturday evening. There are also a couple of gaps in the Sunday concert which I would like to fill from the ranks of Brisbane Folkies.

ABOFOTS - 1 March 2008

by Pat Weir

That Old Triangle sounds again in the hills of Maleny as another fun-packed evening unfolds. The theme, something Old, something New, something Borrowed, something Blue, meant the performers had open season on songs newly written, old favourites borrowed, liberally laced with the musical Blues. It was a BIG night – 20 great performances! Audience participation (including heckling Paul) is a must :

Be upstanding for the national anthem! only this time, everyone knew the words! (More beer, more beer, more beer, more beer …!) Not only did this enliven the start of the second half, it was also filmed for Paul’s folkie bro - back in Liverpool, UK - who is turning 60 (Happy Birthday, Vinnie!)

Again, you had to be there, coz hearing it second-hand just isn’t the same thing as experiencing an ABOFOTS evening.

Here’s how to do it : Book a table at The UpfrontClub (07 5494 2592) and enjoy a meal. Contact Richenda to book a performance spot ( / 07 5499 9190). Or, you could just talk to Paul upon your spontaneous arrival!!

---o0o---

Paul's first CD is available for sale!! - it's VERY entertaining!!! that's right : "why are you not surprised!" It's called "A Taste of Good Music" and he's accompanied by those AB-FAB sheilas RAW SILK (aka The Just Desserts) : what more could you want?! only $24 (I'll bring some along) AND please checkout our new Website (thanks Steve!) (and be sure to go to the ABOFOTS page.

Foco Nuevo

We invite you to come along to our latest performance project, Foco Nuevo. This regular music event will be held on the last Friday of each month and features a diversity of Brisbane singer-songwriters and musicians.

Foco Nuevo is a reference to Brisbane's FOCO Club, a lively and alternative performance space which ran on a weekly basis during the late 1960s. The mix of music and social issues has given a particular character to Brisbane music over several decades, and has never been far from the inspiration for our songs. Combined with our long association with Latin American music, Foco Nuevo aims to contribute to this current of artistic activity.

Hope to see you there,
Lachlan and Sue (JUMPING FENCES)
