The Sicans were an ancient people inhabiting Sicily at the time of the coming of the Sicels. According to some scholars, it is possible that the Sicans belonged to the earlier non-Aryan population of western Europe. Thucydides attributes an Iberian origin to the Sicans.

Francesco Ribezzo published in 1933 the "Sicanic" inscription found at Sciri, near Caltagirone (Sicily). The inscription goes back to the VI century BC and is composed by 58 Greek letters. Some authors consider the text as "influenced by Indo-European", while some others think it is written in an Indo-European language. In the opinion of Giacomo Devoto, though, words like nendas, tebeg, pra arei, pagosti kealte, inrubo can hardly be interpreted as belonging to the Indo-European tradition.
