There are many warnings given to the believer against backsliding or drawing back from following the Lord. They are not applicable to the unregenerate, or to the sinner. All of these warnings become meaningless to the believer if there is absolutely no possibility of falling from the state of grace. We note some of the major warnings against backsliding both in the Old and New Testaments.
(1) The Old Testament One of the words used especially in the Old Testament speaking of those who draw back from following the Lord is the word "backslide". This word is used by Jeremiah 13 times
(Jeremiah 2:19; 3:6,8,11,12,14,22; 5:6; 8:5; 14:7; 31:22; 49:4). The prophet Hosea also uses this word several times (Hosea 4:16; 11:7; 14:4). It is used one in the Hook of Proverbs (Proverbs 14:14). The meaning of the word is "apostasy, heathenish, to flinch, to go back, to retreat’ and it is translated "backsliding, turning away."
It comes from the root word meaning "to turn back." Thus backsliding in the Hebrew has the thought of turning back, or away, being refractory, stubborn, withdrawing, sliding back, or apostasy. It should be notified that the prophet Jeremiah and the prophet Hosea were speaking to God’s chosen nation, Israel when they used this word to describe their spiritual condition. These should become warnings to all God’s people today.
(2]The New Testament The New Testament does not use the word "backslide" but it does use equivalent expressions in writing to the believer.
(a] Jesus warned that iniquity would abound and the love (Greek: "agape"] of many would wax old. It warns of the love of believers waning in such times (Matthew 24:12).
(b] Jesus also warned about "looking back" and becoming unfit for the kingdom of God (Luke 9:62; 17:32).
(c)Paul spoke of those who made "shipwreck" of the faith (I Timothy 1:18-19).
(d)Peter also spoke of those who knew the way of truth and yet returned as a sow to the mire and a dog to the vomit, their latter end being worse than the first (II Peter 2:20-22).
(e)The writer to the Hebrews warns about those who "draw back unto perdition" (Hebrews 10:38-39).
(f) Jesus spoke about believers who become like "salt without savor" (Matthew 5:13).
(g)Jesus also spoke about branches which bore no fruit and were out of the vine (John 15:2,6).
(h]Peter exhorts the believer to continue in the Christian virtues, saying that if he did these things he would "never fall" (II Peter 1:4-9,10)
(i]The believer is told not "to neglect so great a salvation" (Hebrews 2:3).
(j]The Lord Jesus spoke of the tree that brought forth evil fruit. He showed that the person would not be known by calling Him Lord, prophesying, casting out devils or miraculous works, but by the fruits of holy living. This passage is inapplicable to the mere professors or unregenerate (Matthew 7:15-27).
(k)Both Old and New Testaments speak of names being removed from the Book of Life. If this were not possible, then these warnings are meaningless (Exodus 32:30-33; Revelation 3:5; 20:6,14-15; 21:8; 22:18-19). Judas is an example of one who had his name blotted out of the Book of Life (Acts 1:18-22 with Psalm 69:25-28).
(l)The Apostle Paul spoke of the goodness and severity of God on Jew and Gentile in the olive tree. He spoke of God’s severity on His own people who fell through unbelief and were thus broken off as bran hes from the Life of the olive tree. He warned the Gentile believers that they would only experience the goodness of God "If thou continue in His goodness, otherwise thou shalt be cut off" (Romans 11:22,16-26). (Read also Hebrews 3:6,7,12,14)
Thus Old and New Testament alike give exhortations and warnings on concerning backsliding, falling away, or turning from the Lord after having known Him. These Scriptures become meaningless if the believer is unconditionally secure.
